Mediterranean diet could help stop diabetes

According to research from Spain, eating a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit and vegetables could be a good way of protecting against heart disease and type 2 diabetes .

Research published in the British Medical Journal indicates that those people that stuck closely to a Mediterranean diet were considerably less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and heart related problems.

Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez, who led the study, was reported as commenting: "The new thing is that we have been able to assess adherence to a Med diet and the incidence of diabetes in people who were initially healthy . We didn't expect such a high reduction." Miguel is an epidemiologist at the University of Navarra.

Mediterranean diet includes vegetables, fish and healthy fats, with low levels of dairy and red meat.
