According to a recent story from one diabetes sufferer, the diabetes care team at the Royal Free Hospital in London saved her life. Caroline Luck, a 28-year old Government officer, told her story to the press to try and raise awareness about diabetes during Diabetes month.
Caroline, who is in her early 20s, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes aged twelve. Her diabetes was very difficult to control, and she was referred to a consultant endocrinologist, Dr. Martin Press at the Royal Free, for treatment .
Caroline reportedly said: “It was one of the luckiest things that’s ever happened to me. I’ve never met a doctor who puts himself out for his patients as much as Dr Press. He really does care. The rest of the team, including diabetes nurse Ruth Miller, were also fantastic. Until then, I’d only been told to eat healthily. But Denise, the dietitia, taught me to balance my insulin more effectively with carbohydrates to counter the effects on my blood sugar levels.”
Following a dramatic series of operations and treatments, Caroline now has her health back. Caroline was treated at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust.
