Laughter is well known to be extremely good for health . A growing body of research suggests that laughter can help both the body and mind . A study, focused on people with diabetes, found that watching half an hour of comedy every day could cut down levels of stress and the compounds linked with heart disease .
A team at the Loma Linda University in California studied twenty people taking medication for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol . All of the patients took their tablets but half were prescribed mirthful laughter – 30 minutes of comedy daily.
The researchers found that stress hormone levels fell considerably. Laughing apparently raises levels of feel-good endorphins, and boosts hormones that help our immune system to fight infection. According to the researchers, merely anticipating a laugh can benefit health .
People with diabetes may find that regular laughter helps them to manage and control their condition, or at the least helps to lift stress and depression .
