According to leading diabetes charity Diabetes UK, those children in the UK who come from South Asian origin could face a 13 times greater likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, when compared to white children.
The shocking statistics could be of particular concer, as type 2 diabetes sweeps the Asian community in the UK. Type 2 diabetes is reportedly six times more likely amongst people of South Asian descent.’
The reasons are wide and varied. Chief executive of Diabetes UK, Douglas Smallwood, was reported in diabetes news as commenting: “It is very worrying that any child is developing type two diabetes as it is usually only found in adults, but it is particularly alarming that south Asian children are at such high risk. South Asian people are more likely to develop the condition and factors such as eating traditional foods high in salt and fat alongside western ‘fast foods’ compound their risk.”
