FDA warns on diabetes test strips

Tue, 18 Aug 2009
The Food and Drug Administration has warned people with diabetes to closely scrutinise their blood glucose test strips to make sure they aren't getting inaccurate readings. At this stage, the concerns have not crossed the Atlantic and all test strips are thought to be genuine.

The FDA claim that blood glucose monitoring strips called GDH-PQQ could be inaccurate at measuring blood glucose level . This could lead to patients being given inaccurate information.

The FDA pointed out that as many as 13 people have died due to faulty readings from diabetes test strips since 1997. At this stage, the level of inaccuracy remains to be seen, and more diabetes news is expected this week as the FDA probe the issue.
