Diabetes has hit UK headlines again, with a national news story about the ticking diabetes timebomb in the UK, reported in Diabetes.co.uk news yesterday. Leading UK diabetes charity, Diabetes UK warned that as many as seven million people in the UK could have pre-diabetes .
Prediabetes has a variety of other names, including impaired glucose regulatio, impaired glucose tolerance, metabolic syndrome and syndrome X. Pre-diabetes increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 12-15 times, therefore the threat of a large pre-diabetic population is enormous and very real. What’s more, pre-diabetes can be reversed using diet and exercise.
Type 2 diabetes is one of the largest health challenges in the UK. Type 2 diabetes can lead to diabetes complications, which include stroke, heart disease, blindness and amputation . Diabetes is thought to cost the National Health Service 1 million pounds every hour.
