According to diabetes news today, diabetes drug liraglutide could be better at promoting weight loss than orlistat and placebo, when combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet . The drug, the second in the incretin mimetic class, was launched after exenatide.
The diabetic drug was found to reduce weight more than placebo and orlistat over a 20 week period. Some 76% of those surveyed lost over 5% of body weight with a higher dose of liraglutide. This compared to some 30% on placebo and 44% on orlistat.
However, according to the study, more of those taking liraglutide had a greater rate of nausea and vomiting side effects, described by researchers as transient mild to moderate. The research team included professor Michael Lean from the University of Glasgow.
