Despite disagreement from rural doctors, Diabetes Australia has emerged in support of the Rudd Government, who plan to initiate changes in the primary health treatment of the Australian diabetes population .
The acting CEO of Diabetes Australia, Mr. Greg Johnso, reportedly commented to Endocrinology Update that the announcement was welcome. The new funding and approached to diabetes treatment is essential given the type 2 diabetes epidemic sweeping Australia.
Johnson reportedly commented: “There is good evidence that where there is investment in GP focussed multidisciplinary care there are better outcomes and less admissions. What diabetics want is access to good multidisciplinary care as they can find negotiating the current system difficult.”
