Increased diabetes risk for overweight children

Chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease could germinate at a much earlier stage in life than had been suspected, a research team confirmed. Fat toddlers face a much greater chance of developing diabetes, according to the New York Daily News.

Children as young as three are now displaying the markers for cardiovascular disease, with children as young as seven displaying warning signs of type 2 diabetes . The number of overweight young people and a gradual lowering of exercise has contributed to a buildup of chronic diseases .

Dr. Eliana Perrin, the co-author of a study in Pediatrics, reportedly commented: "I think parents should be not so much worried as motivated. Catching something early gives us as parents and pediatricians an opportunity to prevent problems down the road. Parents have a huge role in helping children make healthier choices in what they eat and how often they play."
