According to a recent study by the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, type 2 diabetes is now becoming more common in children, especially Canadian aboriginals. The study was funded by the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the Manitoba Institute of Child Health and the Canadian Diabetes Association .
Between 2006 and 2008 Canada witnesses 345 cases of type 2 diabetes amongst children, some 44 per cent of which were of aboriginal heritage . Dr. Dea, lead researcher, said that the rise in children with diabetes will damage the workforce and the healthcare system in the future.
The study found that many of the children were 13 years old, but several were under ten years of age. Furthermore, 95 per cent of children who were obese were also found to be suffering from type 2 diabetes .
