According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, almost half of all US adults have a chronic condition associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, such as diabetes or hypertension .
The report was published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 45 per cent of individuals 20 years of age and older have diabetes, hypercholesterolemia or hypertension . 3 per cent had all three conditions, whilst 13 per cent had two conditions. 3 per cent of people had high blood pressure and diabetes .
Cheryl Fryar of the CDC reportedly commented: “These findings indicate that a high percentage of the population have a condition associated with heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.”
The research team concluded: “These results emphasize the need for research to identify the reasons for the race/ ethnicity differences and to identify factors that could be modified to mitigate the race/ethnicity differences.”
