A major breakthrough in diabetes treatment could be on the horizo, following the development of a new diabetes drug . The pioneering medication, called Otelixizumab, could entirely halt the decline in the production of insulin . The drug works by switching off the destructive mechanism that causes type 1 diabetes, halting damage to the pancreas and allowing it to produce insulin .
The drug is provided as a daily jab for six days in a row, and will reportedly be most effective when given shortly after type 1 diabetes diagnosis . The new drug alters the balance between some of the cells in the immune system .
The findings were reported in the Daily Mail and published in the journal Diabetologia. The drug could one day help people with diabetes to halt or reduce the number of insulin injections needed to manage blood glucose .
