Baroness Barbara Young has taken office as the new Chief Executive of the charity Diabetes UK, replacing Douglas Smallwood, who had been in the position since 2004. She intends to help improvements in the three strategic aims of Diabetes UK, quality care for all, healthy lifestyle and research into improving the life of people with diabetes .
Baroness Young said “Everyone who works and volunteers for Diabetes UK is involved in achieving these goals. Whether involved in lobbying local NHS providers or the Government, raising awareness, fundraising or providing support and information, everyone at Diabetes UK is working to improve the lives of people with diabetes .”
The new Chief Executive, who helped establish the Care Quality Commissio, also commented that she would work towards achieving the strategic priorities efficiently and cost-effectively, and that there is a need to address some of the issues presented by the coalition government’s White Paper published July, as well the Comprehensive Spending Review.
She added “Diabetes UK will be at the heart of ensuring that the NHS involves the very people who will use their services in designing and developing the care they need. I will work with the Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers and people with diabetes to ensure everyone is clear about the direction and their role in shaping the future.”
