An educational event for children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes will be held this summer in South Yorkshire.
The Discovery Event is a joint project by type 1 diabetes charity JDRF and Getting Sorted – the award-winning diabetes enterprise unit of Leeds Metropolitan University .
The three-day programme is aimed at offering young people with type 1 diabetes and their families the chance to participate in group learning sessions to help them manage their condition.
A team of experts will be on hand to answer questions on the practical and emotional issues of living with diabetes, including insulin treatment, diet, carb counting, exercise, stress and diabetes at school, as well the latest JDRF research into a cure for type 1 diabetes . There will also be a wide range of family activities and evening entertainment.
“This is a brilliant opportunity for children and young people with type 1 and their families to meet with others and share their experiences,” Liz Webster, Director of Getting Sorted, said.
“There will be sessions with inspirational speeches from people living with type 1 and the whole weekend is designed to educate young people and their families to help them self-manage their condition.”
The Discovery Event will be held at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Headingley Campus from August 16-18.
Places are still available to families nationwide, with tickets priced at £80 per child (aged 2-11) and £130 per adult (aged 12+).
