Childrens Diabetes Team fundraising for fun trip away

A diabetes support group in West Yorkshire is hoping to win a slice of charity funding to help pay for a children’s weekend trip away.
The Children’s Diabetes Team at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is taking part in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner’s Wish 2013 campaign, which offers local not-for-profit organisations in the chance to receive a share of £25,000.
The Team specialises in helping kids and teenagers with diabetes in the Huddersfield area cope with their condition, and every year it organises a weekend away for its young members. To keep this tradition going, it is looking to raise money through the 2013 Wish campaign, which will go towards funding next year’s trip.
The aim of the trip is to introduce young diabetes sufferers between the ages of 9 and 15 to a friendly, non-clinical environment, where they can take part in various confidence-building activities. Teenagers are also given the chance to attend social events, while parents get to enjoy a break from their non-stop care duties.
“Diabetes is a lifelong condition that requires 24-hour management,” commented Group leader and dietician Alison Oversby.
“Having a diagnosis is life changing and young people and their families have lots to learn. It can make them feel isolated and friendships can become difficult.”
She added: “The main aim of the weekend is to have fun while supporting and learning along the way. We are passionate about offering this opportunity to all young people with diabetes and aim to raise funds to allow the annual weekend away to continue.
“We cannot make the young peoples’ diabetes go away, but we can support them in feeling more positive about their future.”
