People with diabetes who own either the Abbott FreeStyle or FreeStyle Mini blood glucose meters (monitors) have been warned of a potential fault with the devices.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has confirmed the two meters may produce incorrect low blood glucose results when used with Abbott’s FreeStyle Lite and FreeStyle blood glucose test strips.
The affected models, which are used by around 11,000 people in the UK, have been recalled by manufacturer Abbott Diabetes Care and the company has already issued an alert to healthcare professionals and their customers.
Users of the FreeStyle Mini or FreeStyle meters are being urged to contact Abbott to receive a new device free of charge. While awaiting their new meter, existing models can continue to be used to monitor blood glucose levels, but Abbott is advising people to take extra care to notice any signs of high blood glucose.
John Wilkinso, the MHRA’s Director of Medical Devices, said: “People need to have a fully working blood glucose meter so they can monitor their blood glucose levels and if necessary bring their glucose levels back to a safe level.
“Anyone who has these meters should contact the manufacturer Abbott Diabetes Care on 0500 467 466 who will provide you with a new one.”
