Man walks 40 miles non-stop to raise type 1 diabetes awareness

A man has pledged his support to his wife who has type 1 diabetes by walking 40 miles to raise awareness of the condition.
Stephen Richman (pictured, left), from Daventry in Northamptonshire, embarked upon the “exhausting” challenge on Friday 16 December to fundraise for charity Diabetes UK.
Speaking to the Daventry Express newspaper, Stephen said: “I am pleased with the achievement because it’s raised funds and awareness. It was exhausting but thoughts of Carol kept me going for the 40 miles.”
The 40-mile non-stop feat took place earlier this month when Stephen set out from Daventry and walked via Towcester and Silverstone before ending his challenge at the Northampton Hospital Diabetes Centre.
Stephe, who met his wife in 2011, managed to raise £300 for Diabetes UK and endured his grueling challenge to represent the daily challenges people with diabetes experience every day.
Recalling the first time he saw his wife Carol suffer from low blood sugar, Stephen said: “It shocked me and when she is in pain I couldn’t do anything. She suffers from blindness and cellulitis in her legs as well as sleep apnea.”
His wife uses a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) but has to pay for the sensors herself as she is not eligible for free sensors on the NHS.
Stephen said: “Carol has the new sensors to check her blood sugar levels which are better for everyone, but you have to pay for them and I think they should be on the NHS.”
