Leicester diabetes team nominated for top prize at BMJ awards

A hospital diabetes team in Leicester has been shortlisted for a prestigious medical award, it has been announced.
The Adult Inpatient Diabetes team, which is part of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, has been nominated for the Clinical Leadership Team for 2017 award at the BMJ Awards.
Dr Kath Higgins, the clinical lead for inpatient diabetes and a consultant in diabetes medicine, said: “I am thrilled that the Adult Inpatient Diabetes team has been shortlisted for the BMJ Awards Clinical Leadership Team for 2017.
“This is fantastic recognition of the journey this team has been on over the past five years raising the profile of Inpatient Diabetes Care within UHL.”
Higgins and colleagues have been shortlisted for developing new ways of working to help deliver a better level of care to people with diabetes.
She created the diabetes inpatient steering group, which among many diabetes-related safety aspects, drafted a trust-wide strategy for the safe use of insulin in hospitals.
The team also developed a system which helped people with diabetes learn more about blood glucose testing.
“As medical lead for the team working alongside nursing leads, Judith Spiers and Helen Atkins, we have always shared a common vision for how care for inpatients with diabetes can be improved,” Higgins said.
“Passio, hard work and resilience have resulted in us being where we are now however there is still much more to do.”
The annual BMJ Awards celebrates and rewards healthcare teams in the medical professio, a team of distinguished judges will decide on the overall winners.
They will be announced on Thursday 4 May at a ceremony in London.
