Cinnamon is a popular cooking ingredient that is known to have a number of health benefits. The active compounds in this widely used spice have properties that reduce blood glucose (sugar) levels and improve markers of cholesterol metabolism. Cinnamon is also one of the most powerful anti-oxidant of any natural food source.
What does the research say?
Scientific studies into the effects of cinnamon on type 2 diabetes show that, taken in the right daily dose, it can:
- Lower blood glucose levels
- Improve markers of cholesterol metabolism
- Enhance insulin sensitivity
- Acts as a powerful anti-oxidant
Lower blood glucose levels: A review of various studies demonstrates that cinnamon reduces blood fasting glucose by 18-29% and also reduces the harmful effects of the remaining raised glucose in the bloodstream, which can happen frequently for those people afflicted by diabetes.
Improve markers of cholesterol metabolism: Several studies show that cinnamon reduces “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by up to 27%, triglycerides by up to 30% and other risk factors linked with increased heart and blood vessel disease.
Enhance insulin sensitivity: Studies show that cinnamon can improve glucose regulation and self-management of diabetes by significantly increasing insulin sensitivity - the optimum medical approach for improving diabetes control. Better insulin sensitivity means less insulin is required to keep blood sugars in check, which in turn reduces the harm and damage caused by raised insulin and blood sugar levels.
Acts as a powerful anti-oxidant: Cinnamon has one of the very highest anti-oxidant strength counts of all the food in nature, with an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbant Capacity) value of 130,000 compared to an average apple’s value of 4,000. Studies show that it lowers general inflammation levels in the body, reducing the risk or harmful effects of many diseases including diabetes, arthritic diseases, blood vessel diseases, dementia, as well as helping to reduce weight gain.
For healthy, non-diabetic individuals, these benefits can help lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart problems in later life.
What makes EasyBetic different from other cinnamon supplements?
EasyBetic is based on Cinnamon Ceylon (Cinnamonium zeylonica, Sri Lankan, or True Cinnamon), one of two main subspecies of Cinnamon, the other being Cinnamon Cassia (Chinese cinnamon).
Dr David Morris MBChB MRCP (UK) explains that while Cinnamon Cassia is by far the more commonly used of the two, it contains high amounts of toxic coumarins (blood thinners). The daily upper limit of coumarins has been much reduced under European regulations due to links between the compounds and extensive liver damage and increased cancer risk.
According to Dr Morris, taking Cassia in the quantities required to get the best health benefits easily exceeds the toxicity safety levels. Ceylon Cinnamon contains 1,250 less coumarins than Cassia and is therefore regarded as being much safer.
EasyBetic has been carefully designed and formulated by doctors to provide all the benefits of Cinnamon Ceylon listed above using a concentrated extract (10:1), which means each 250mg capsule of the supplement is equivalent to 2500mg or 2.5 grams of cinnamon whole spice (ordinary cinnamon). This makes it much more practical and less expensive than taking 10 x 500 mg capsules per day of whole spice to get the minimum daily dosage that has been shown in clinical trials to provide/ deliver the medical benefits for those suffering from chronic illnesses.
Benefits of concentrated extract
In addition to being more practical, taking the purified concentrated extract of Cinnamon Ceylon provides all the health benefits whilst reducing the risk of allergic reactions, which can be triggered by the long-term daily use of cinnamon whole spice.
While the process of creating medical grade extract from Ceylon Cinnamon is expensive, it is still the cheapest way of providing a dosage that is safe, most effective for blood sugar control and most practical to take long term.
As a doctor with a family history of diabetes, I highly recommend you consider taking a Cinnamon Ceylon extract as it is a safe and particularly helpful way to improve insulin sensitivity, and therefore greatly improve your ability to control diabetes and assist the self-management of this potentially debilitating disease. It may also help prevent pre-diabetes developing into full diabetes, which is important for those who are over-weight, less active or have a family history of diabetes.
