    Shocked by bake off comment

It's an entertainment show, not a medical documentary. Get over yourselves guys.

    What equipment do you carry?

I don't have a pump so I need to carry pens, used and unused (and used) needles, test meter and strips, pricker and lancets. I have a case to conveniently carry all that: "Joe's small-in-one" which does the job pretty well. The only problem is that as my meter is quite big there is only room for...

    Equipment wallet

I currently have a "Joe's small-in-one" wallet for my meter, pen, pricker, strips, needles and lancets. I find it just a little bit too small for e.g. an overnight trip. While there is a slot for a second pen it's very hard to close with 2 pens in place and there's very little room for used...

    Medical Id - Bracelet/necklace

I wear a chain bracelet. It's fairly chunky and looks OK. I looked at Medic Alert and discussed it on the forum, particularly about the subscription and the ability for medics to dial in and get information from their database. No one had experience of that feature being used and I concluded it...

    Forgetting to take a shot.

I use a Novopen which takes my Novorapid cartridges. It has a display of last dose and time since take built-in. There have been many instances when I've forgotten whether I'v taken my dose so I find it very useful. I also have a stock of disposable pens in case the refillable one is broken/lost.

Do you people get all your diabetes stuff for nothing?

Here is a link to WHO statistics on health expenditure as a percentage of GDP: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.XPD.TOTL.ZS A few examples: UK: 9.1% USA 17.1% Canada: 10.4 Euro zone: 10.4

    Are you disabled?

Yes, I am careful with that. I have T1D and find it reasonably easy to manage but a neighbour who has had the same for nearly 50 years has a really hard time of it with up to 10 hypos a week despite using a pump. (And I mentioned the stoma case because my wife has one.)

    Are you disabled?

No, I don't mean are you in a wheelchair but do you regard your diabetes as a disability? I recall a news item a few months ago where a person with T1D gave up work because they regarded diabetes management as a full time job. A similar news article cropped up yesterday where a young woman with...

    Forgetting to take a shot.

I thought I understood my condition fairly well until a couple of recent incidents when I forgot to take my mealtime shots. The first time was at breakfast; I remembered a couple of hours later and took my usual 5 units. By noon I was hypo. The second occasion was with an evening meal when I...

Do you people get all your diabetes stuff for nothing?

I won't go on at length about the joys of the British NHS, I'm sure Americans will regard it all as dangerous 'socialism'. Being over 60 I get all my prescriptions free and before that I paid a standard yearly rate equivalent to 1-2 items per month. I had a shock recently seeing some supplies in...

    Question about insulin

You need to have something rapid-acting to hand in case of a hypo. Alternatives are a snack-sized carton of apple/orange juice (NOT low sugar) a mixer size can of Coke (not diet) or glucose tablets from the chemist.

    T1D and Metformin

When my doctors figured out I was T1 not T2, I expected to come off all the tablets as I started on Insulin. Instead, they kept me on Metformin. I have queried it and the Professor I saw said stay with it as it could help keep my weight down. So who else is on Metformin with T1? Is it routine...

    insulin needles sizes

I was given 4mm needles from the off. They are plenty long enough, even when I inject through a shirt as I do most times during the day. I read on here a few weeks ago of someone getting a rapid effect from Lantus as a result of not injecting it into fat. I imagine that is a higher risk if you...

Memoir Pen any UK replacements around?

I'm on Novorapid and have their cartridge pen with memory. It just gives last dose and time since injecting but a couple of times it's got me out of the 'did I or didn't I' dilemma. I believe the batteries are replaceable. Are you sure you can't put a new battery in your old one?

    Cheaper replacement for Lantus

On my last visit to my DSN she told me my Lantus would be replaced with a cheaper version in the future. I didn't write it down at the time so don't remember the brand name. Anyone else had this happen? p.s. I'm in the UK on free prescriptions so the cost saving goes to the NHS, not me.
