Mental health & adjusting to new lifestyle

I am not prediabetic but at least 14 years into type 2. I had most of those years on diet and exercise, with the latter declining for the last 5 years, because of a spine problem. After last year's spine operation, I have reduced pain in my left leg, but have nerve damage, which means I can only...

Statins, advised to start 20 mg Atorvastatin

I was diagnosed statins, by my neurologist because of 'hardened arteries'. Simvastatin had no side effects for me and the NICE recommended Atorvastatin is also fine. The only problem for me is that the brand accessed by the pharmacy does vary and some Atorvastatin brands are very bitter. I'm...

More pleasures (certain foods) to lose.

I'm a food fusspot, but my husband is worse. He won't eat any fish. he likes shop ready meals (meat ones) but in the last few years, what was once nice to eat is tasteless or full of spice or some additive that causes indigestion. He won't cook proper food and has binned salad ingredients and...

More pleasures (certain foods) to lose.

Today, I looked back at my old posts and read about my house bound father (He had Parkinsons), saying , when diagnosed with diabetes, that life wasn't worth living if he couldn't eat what he enjoyed. I complained, then, that I felt there was little to eat, that was suitable and that I liked, so...

    Neuropathy advice

My neurological symptoms are mainly on the left, but some are both and the weirdest is a feeling that I am wearing thick socks (like motorbike riders have) with holes in the big toe part, so mine seem to poke through. It's so realistic that I have actually stuck my feet out of bed, to remove the...

    Diabetes and other conditions

I'm on a number of drugs, some of which cause constipation, eg tramadol, and the only sure way for me to 'go' is my daily easy peelers, usually clementines.

    Neuropathy advice

I wouldn't ask for a conductivity test, but for referral to a neurologist, who will have these tests and others to hand. Mine is really good and gave me the good news, on my 60th birthday, that I had diabetes, then hypothyroidism, arteriosclerosis, B12 deficiency and over half my spinal discs...

Glucose Tolerance testing at GP practise

I was given a battery of tests by my neurologist (who eventually found my symptoms are due to thoracic disc herniations) and based on those I was summoned to our practice's diabetes nurse, who sent me for the GTT to confirm suspicions. I wasn't pregnant as I was 60 at the time.

    Type 2 atorvastatin

Interesting about atorvastatin increasing blood sugar levels. Until my MOT, in July, I was on simvastatin, but was told that NICE now recommended the atorvastatin, as it's better and now more affordable. Omeprazole was also added as I'm on aspirin. In July my HbA1c was 49, but now it's 52, but...

    Artificial sweeteners, for and against

You shouldn't have grapefruit, if on statins.

    Someone to talk to

Hannah, do you have a local branch of Diabetes UK? (If Bradford is where you live and not your surname you do.) Our local has monthly meetings, usually with an interesting talk (not necessarily diabetes related, but sometimes by consultants), followed by socialising. They also have other...

Glucose Tolerance testing at GP practise

My GP practice didn't even do them 6 years ago, so mine was done at our hospital's blood test centre, but by appointment, instead of walk in.

    My Wife Refuses Insulin

My husband's friend resisted taking insulin for ages, but he was found unconscious because of a foot infection and taken to hospital where they gave it to him. He, now , happily uses, saying it's the best thing he's done for years and wishes he hadn't been so difficult.

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

52 last week, after 49 in July with a target of 48. I had been rather naughty, until July, over doing the sweeties when under stress, but having been quite good since, so am now disappointed. I've been type 2 for 6 years, but , until July, was not given readings; just told all was fine. My...

    Splenda

Tesco now do a version of Splenda (granules and mini-tablets) , which is much cheaper. I tried Aldi's granules, but didn't like it as sometimes it was over sweet and other times had no sweetness at all. (Possibly a blending problem with the carrier?)
