Diagnosed Type 2 back in 2008 and put straight on Metformin, Ramapril, Simvastatin. All was going swimmingly and seemed to get away with plenty of 'naughties'....drinking, smoking, burgers and choccy.....in fact I thought I was invincible !!
All came crashing down 2 weeks ago when my girlfriend noticed I was smelling constantly of pear drops, my head was spinning and thought I was going to pass out, almost like anxiety attacks (albeit don't think I have ever had one). My vision was blurred beyond belief. I hadn't been feeling right for some time. On testing my sugar level, my meter simply said Hi (which wasn't a familiar greeting as it goes). On retesting, the 'hi' meant high....29.9 high !! This prompted an emergency visit to the doctor when after 3 days I was still ranging from 15-20.
Hospital tests, High blood pressure, tons of sugar and keytones in urine had my specialist diabetic GP flummoxed and concluded this could be DKA. I didn't have a clue how serious this was, but I left the surgery under no illusions. I had 4 days to see if the addition of saxagliptin would stave off the inevitable insulin. Glad to say it worked alongside a serious dietary modification and zero alcohol.
This has been a real wake up call, and a real change of attitude. Have never been one to participate in forums, but with my new found approach, wanted to share the experience with folk who would understand the emotions, fears and concerns that I came face to face with. Am spending a lot more time reading others experiences/tips and advise on the forums here and I have found all very informative and strangely supportive in simply knowing that you're not alone. 8 years after diagnosis, I am a 'newbie' here and look forward to more involvement with the 'community'.
Health and Longevity to all
