Not everyone loses weight on lchf but I haven't seen any posters not get reduced bgs!
Even I get lower bgs on high protein than high carbs.
I'm on medium carbs, not high protein and medium fat but working on 150g carb and healthy fats.

Personally, I would refuse to see the Intermediate care team again, either just cancel my appointment or don't make one. I wouldn't bother making a fuss. It's not worth the stress. This person is clearly not knowledgable, not even open minded, and to be rude to boot, get rid of negatives in your life.

I would definitely buy a meter and, if you are computer literate or happy using apps, I would start religiously recording my testing results - personally I use a spreadsheet but there must be some good apps out there. What do people recommend? When you have a picture of what is going on, then you will feel more calm and in control.

I would definitely try LCHF - just go for it 100% and give it one month. Start easy, don't complicate matters. Have breakfast that's egg based (omelette is an easy one, or 2 hard boiled eggs with full fat mayonaise), it seems weird at first without bread, but you'll soon get used to it. Lunch, any old meat / fish / cheese with a salad and full fat dressing. Dinner, any old meat / fish with above ground veg, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli etc. You can put butter on your veg or a creamy sauce. That will automatically give you approximately 20g daily carbs, with no weighing or measuring or stressing. No snacking, drink water and black tea and coffee (or put a spoonful of double cream in your coffee). You can follow a diet, no matter how strict, for a month! And this diet won't slow down your metabolic rate and leave you worse off than before.

In that month, you will see your readings improve virtually every day, you will probably lose weight. When you start to feel in control you can introduce a wider variety of foods, using the meter to test which foods spike you.

People can tolerate differing amounts of carbs, anything under, say, 60g a day is seen as very low carb. You may never be able to eat high carb foods again, but personally I think it's better to go 'cold turkey' - get really good improvements, then see what you can tolerate in the long term, if that's the route you want to do down, but you may discover the delights of low carb living and want to stick with it for ever, especially following some of the recipes such as those in diet doctor and yourlighterside.com

Don't be sad, be mad, get in control! Let your results speak for themselves.

I feel I have to get this off my chest or I'll just give up. I was diagnosed Type 2 two and a half years ago and am currently on Alogliptin (Vipidia) and a small dose of Metformin. I was on Dapagliflozin but after an horrendous dose of thrush was taken off this. My levels are coming down slowly but my Diabetes Nurse thought I should be referred to the Intermediate Care Team. I had my first appointment yesterday and was left in tears and feeling so stressed. The nurse I saw was, she said, blunt - I would say rude. She told me not to test my blood as it would just get me tied in knots. I mentioned the LCHF diet but she said that wasn't advisable as fat creates fat round your middle and I am trying to lose weight. Although I said I had read quite a lot about diabetes she said I 'needed educating'. In short she treated me like a 6 year old, making judgements about me when she'd only just met me. I alternated between feeling distraught and feeling angry for the rest of the day, and at the moment l'm thinking of giving up, stopping my meds and starving myself. Any advice?
Omg. Dont feel bad, shes an idiot!!! Since veing on low carb high fat diet i have lost 20kg in 4 months (if that) and my waist has shrunk by 20cm my bmi has gone from 33. Something to 27.4....

Stress will make your blood sugars rise. Personally i would tell her that she needs educating... fat doesnt create fat, sugar and carbs become fat... they are "stored" energy reserves. Fat actually stops you from putting on fat by slowing the release of the sugars into the body or stopping some which would have become fat.

You arent wrong you just need support which you obviously dont get on nhs from this type of person... next time tell her where to shove her bad advice! Dont give up.

Yes you can't really blame the nurses they only quote the guide lines they have been trained to follow but that is no excuse for rudeness. We have to remember there is only a small minority who do low carb among the vast numbers of diabetics world wide so it will be slow if ever for the advice to change. We are better not to mention it to them just let them think we are doing it their way and carry on doing what we think is best for us and then they are happy and so are we
I disagree... if we allow them to believe we are getting better and controlling our blood sugars their way... the advice they give will NEVER change. We need to stand up for the truth so that more people will get better and not suffer from this bad and wrong advice!

(P.s when i say get better i mean improve generally alround)

The good thing that is happening is that we finally have some courageous and influential people who have seen the light and are prepared to risk everything, certainly their reputations in the 'conventional' medical community speaking out! Prof Noakes, Dr Mulhotra, Westerman, Phinney, Voleck.

If you haven't watched any yet, @Ryan's_Daughter watch some of their videos on You Tube. I find nothing more inspirational. I'm not holding my breath, but I do think the tide is turning, even in mainstream.

And I do agree, @busydiabeticmum - we should challenge the rubbish they come out with.

Thank you to everyone who has replied to me, I really appreciate your advice. I've been testing for a while now, and I know it is carbs that spike me, apart from potato, strangely enough. I'm feeling more positive having read all the comments. I think I am going to follow the 'go cold turkey' advice and see how it goes. Unfortunately my wonderful GP is off sick herself and the practice doesn't know when she'll be back, so I can't talk to her about things, but I will try and speak to the DN at the practice. I had a letter from the horrible Specialist DN from the ICT detailing what we had discussed, and it proves she didn't listen to me as she's got stuff wrong! Hey ho. I'm trying to rise above it!!
