Pre op metformin

I am having anterior cervical discectomy and fusion next week. At my first pre op assessment, the nurse told me to withhold metformin on the morning of surgery, which made sense to me as I would not be eating anything. However, I am now being operated on at a different hospital and had to have another pre op assessment, when I was told that the protocol had changed and I was to take my metformin prior to admission without food. Can anyone enlighten me as I am very confused and I can't get to speak to a healthcare professional.

Hi. My own personal view is that as Metformin is not a vital medication and can be stopped and started with out problems, I would stop it a day or so before the op? I read the leaflet the other night and it said to stop it before surgery although I forgot to do this for my recent surgery. I don't believe it's critical either way particularly with Met SR. All you can do is Google the web and make your own decision having had two conflicting bits of NHS advice.
