People who interrupt you when you're talking and people who won't listen.
Off to see the dietician this morning...this is going to be interesting.

Do I take the "smile nicely and nod as appropriate" route, or the "shoot them down in flames for even suggesting I look at carbs" route?

Oooooh, let me just toss a coin LOL

I think I would take my blood records with me and demonstrate the downward trends, and spikes you have seen from carbs. I mean; isn't that why you ate a few yesterday? In preparation for today?

There's always a silver lining, if you look hard enough. :)

I think that arguing with them thinking that they are going to change doctrine (even if they wanted to) is a waste of time. I just smiled at mine and accepted her action plan. When she asked me if I wanted another appointment I indicated that I had the gist now and didn't need another appointment. We parted friends.

My DN was mildly outraged when I showed her the action plan with "Eat carbs with every meal" on it.

I vote for smiling and nodding.

Yep, course it was LOL

Actually, you know something interesting? By 2 hrs after last night's binge, my BG was under 7. And this morning it was only 6.1, which is pretty low by recent standards. Funny huh? I have a feeling that hormones or maybe even just the prevailing wind is at work here. I'll never understand some of my readings. I've lost 5% of my bodyweight in only 6 weeks though, so I'm hoping that's impacted my insulin resistance and explains the good BG readings last night/this morning. I should really re-try the 2 slices of white toast and 100ml Pepsi that gave me a 9.9 a few weeks ago! All in the name of science of course...

good luck with the dietician
i saw one and she did nothing for me
Ugh! I remember!

You're doing great now though @ally1...you're your own dietician now...and doing nicely it seems :)

I know, I understand what you're saying...and that's what I intend to do every time...but then I get in there and I just want to stab their eyeballs out

Could I ask why you are having to see a dietician when you are happy with your diet and I take it you would not want to change it whatever the dietician says You are doing so well on what you are doing so that is really good

There's a few reasons:
1. My employer has paid for this appointment - it was offered to me just before I had my blood results back, so at that point I wasn't actually on a LCHF diet. I was morbidly obese, having been on an 8 year long binge cycle of a 30 year long binge-starve thing...and not sure where to start finding balance.
2. I'm a binge-starver and have never managed to get the right balance. I know the key to getting healthy in the long term is to find some balance. Yes, it sounds easy. but there's more to it (see the next point)
3. Because my disordered eating habits were starting to affect me physically (in the form of recurrent abscesses requiring surgery), my employer suggested I have some CBT sessions with an eating disorder specialist. They've paid for that, but the condition was that I saw a dietician too. Hence, I saw a dietician because I really wanted, no, needed the CBT.
4. And finally, although I'm happy with LCHF, I'm struggling with certain aspects of it

Ok, so on to what actually happened in the appointment. Well, it was like a breath of fresh air...

He started by asking what I was eating and instead of going for the confrontational LCHF approach, I said I'd been a bit scared to eat carbs in any great quantity and I'd been making up for it with some extra protein and fats...and then since he hadn't bitten my head off by that point, I thought "in for a penny, in for a pound" and I told him that logically-speaking a diet higher in fat and lower in carb made more sense to me,

To my surprise, he said the NHS advice was all wrong, that recent studies are saying a lower carb, higher fat diet is better for BG control and weight loss, both in the long and short term. He says he can't understand why things haven't changed in the NHS yet, but seems to think they will as more and more studies with larger sample groups are being published. He said the eat well plate was a load of tosh! He also said fats have been demonised and we should all be eating more of them...yay, I'll go get me some cheese :)

Result!

He gave me some ideas on how I can tweak my diet to give me more energy etc, and says I'm doing everything right, just tweak and carry on. No need to go back :)

So, guys, it looks like things may change at some point. This guy isn't an NHS dietician, he's recently qualified and works for a consultancy occupational health service that my employer uses. It's like Bupa, but not Bupa...if you know what I mean LOL.

Oh...and as if things couldn't be any more positive, he said test regularly and eat to your meter. Ignore what your GP says LOL

@Loobles He sounds like a keeper! So pleased that you were honest with him. Sounds like you have a great team helping you and, together with your own efforts, will crack this. Delighted for you x

Yep, except he said I don't need to go back. So that's good - one less appointment :)

Just read through thread. After first post I was about to say, why make assumption that it would be a negative experience?

Ok, so they often are negative, but if we go to these appointments with closed minds, we get nothing from them and waste our time and that of the HCP. They must get fed up with people coming to see them, just because they were referred, who have no intention of taking any notice.

I had an appointment last week week with a health trainer. Went with an open mind, but secretly doubting it would be of use. I was prepared to listen, but made sure I was listened to as well. The result was we both gained from the experience. I got some new information on exercise sessions available, and she had info from me on how I had managed by diabetes and weightloss, which she promised she would use to advise other and share with her colleagues.

As I got to the end of the thread @Loobles , I realised you found the appointment was better than you had anticipated. So, you have demonstrated that working in collaboration with HCPs, sharing knowledge, is a good way to go.

Well done, if more of us take this approach we can effect change.

Did you tell him you loved him straight away, or leave it the full 10 seconds?

Just askin', you understand. ;)

It just goes to show Loobles, you should always go to these meetings with an open-mind rather than making your mind-up before you get there, pleased it went better than you expected :)
