Hi all,
Sorry I bet people post about this all the time - my search isn't working.

Do we T1s have to get a flu jab? If so, when? Is it advised?

(Speaking of winter flu I guess I'll have to start asking questions about Christmas dinner soon!!!)

My GPs surgery hold special days where they administer flu jabs to patients with various conditions including Diabetes and patients over a certain age. It is a bit like a production line, I go and check in at a desk then go in to a room where there are a line of Drs and nurses all giving injections,

Our surgery has a series of "production line" sessions, where we can just turn up, roll up our sleeves, queue, and get jabbed. They send out a reminder with dates and times to everyone who they consider at risk.

Ours do it by surname, so A-F is the first week etc and then an extra week after if you forgot. My week is w/c 29/9. X

You don't have to have the flu jab but it's advisable, getting flu makes type 1 diabetes very difficult to control and can lead to complications such as pneumonia and DKA.

As Jack mentions earlier, you can get the flu jab done at the likes of Asda, Tesco & Lloyd's Pharmacies, they just take a few details from you then they write to your gp surgery to say you've had the flu vaccination, I find this is much more convenient than trying to fit in with the gp surgery's timetable.

No, you are free to refuse any medication but yes, it is advised that groups at particularly high risk do get the vaccine - flu (real flu, not just a cold) does kill after all.
