Angry people and liver!
I started in 1972 as an apprentice gas engineer I was on £4·50 a week. My mom had £2 a week for my keep, I used to spend at least £2 a week on girls and beer, the rest I just wasted.
How many girls were there? hope you didn't have to eke the £2 between too many, lol.

My first job was in 1966. Left school at 16 and was an engineering apprentice. £4.10s (£4.50p) per week. The firm put me through college and in-house training and now I am a very successful engineer.

Mine was in 1999! I was 14 and come from a small town called oundle. Oundle is basically built around a whole town of private schools ( a lot of rich parents send their kids there)

I worked the evenings after school as a dinner lady, laying the tables, serving them dinner, clearing and washing up.

£3 an hour

My daughter did the same thing, when she was also about 14, but at Winchester College, which is also vair posh.

Apparently the boys were all warned not to talk to the kitchen staff, who were all about my daughter's age. I think the teachers thought their charges would be entrapped into an unsuitable alliance by nasty girls from the local Council Estate. I told my daughter that she was forbidden to talk to any of the boys because I didn't want her to end up married to the sons of either an in-bred aristocrat, a Russian Mafiosi, or a corrupt politician from the African sub-continent :)

:) I think I was safe as I was seen as more of a lower class servant to them. Couldn't possibly expect them to socialise with a peasant like myself :)

Hi rowan, similar to you, trained as a GPO telephonist, in September 1974, on ordinary switchboard, console ( very new and system then) Directory enquires and the emergency console, asking for emergency services., 999. If I am right in remembering the wages, I think it was about £12.00 per week and some pence then, very exciting for a 16 year old, and I had to sign the secrets act too :) But 6 weeks before starting my 'proper job', I worked at the AA, Automobile Association as a temp in the Projects department, just to earn some money and keep busy. Loved it

Commenced employment in June 1968 at the tender age of 14 (was 15 in the August) £5 ten shillings per week as an import entry clerk for Albany Freight in West Drayton, also got luncheon vouchers but can't remember how much. £2 pounds went to my parents for board etc.

Halcyon days lots of money, no responsibility. Ah the magic of youth.

Quickly graduated to doing the MIB's (merchandise in baggage) turning out to Heathrow to meet and do customs clearance for all sorts including, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals etc etc had a smashing time not thought about those days in a long time.

Didn't we, as an operator, have to put the public through to International calls when they phoned us, I'm sure I remember doing that in 1974/5 :)
