Hi guys

I really need your help and support I am type 1 diabetic and have been since 2009 i am 5ft 7 and have always been around 9 stone anyway i became very forgetful when it came to taking my insulin and practically stopped at 1 point my weight dropped to 8stone 5lb so 2 months ago i made a conscious decision and started my insulin again and really sticking 2 it i have been testing my sugar levels about 10 times a day and it is always around 6 so i am very happy about that, but since starting my insulin again i have gained 2 stone in 2 months :-( i wouldn't mind but i have just gained the weight on my stomach in total i have gained 7 inches on my waist :-( i used to be 31 inches now im pushing 39 inches

i have been doing basically absolutely no carbs for approx. 2 weeks and even tho the weight has slowed down i have not lost anything i have also started jogging for approx. 20 mins each day i am doing 200 sit ups/crunches daily i also lift weight approx. 3 times a week which i have never done anything like this before surely the weight should have started coming off by now

i went to my doctors about it and they only thing he could find was i had extremely low ferritin levels so he has put me on strong iron tablets but apart from that everything is fine
he also will not give me anything for weight as my bmi is still in normal range

typical food plan

breakfast 2 boiled eggs
dinner egg salad
tea tuna and veg or chicken stir fry

i generally have the odd snack of babybel and slice of ham with maybe some mayo
i also have approx. 5 cups of coffee a day with 45ml of watered down cream (in total not in each cup!)

please can someone tell me where i am going wrong i am getting really depressed with it all

.you can lose weight and take your insulin, are you on a 2 pen basal bolus? a mixed insulin ?

I'm T2 but would start with basal check
http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120
http://www.salforddiabetescare.co.uk/index2.php?nav_id=1007

can you do this for a month and see the result.? use a food counter and double check the carbs, half are wrong on them, but as a T1 you may have found that out already.
roughly, don't get OCD on it :)
30g carb a day from veg and salad / 120cal
60g protein / 240 cal
rest from healthy fats and oils 150g / 1350 cal. for energy
total ~1700 cal [you may be eating less than this now, but try it]

a long page and a few good video’s
http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

atkins induction diet has a lot of recepies

I know your pain :( Ive put about 1.5 stone on since diagnosis 4 years ago. I understand how depressing it can be. I still keep some of my old jeans I used to wear. My diet has always been lower in carbs but recently Ive decided to be very strict and stick to 30g per day. I see some results and hope for more. Do you count carbs and protein in your diet? Stick to low carb for longer.I hope it will work for us

You don't appear to be eating much looking at that typical days food plan, the only thing I can suggest is you ask to speak with a dietitian and see if they can come up with anything, if you do ask for an appointment with the dietitian who is assigned to the hospital diabetes clinic as they are often DAFNE trained. Good luck.

I feel just like you. I just posted feeling really down about weight and being stuck. My only joy is that my sugar levels are dropping to levels I have not seen since I was diagnosed. I will continue, but after 3 weeks I am gutted that I have not a single gram to show. I hope we can get some answers here.

@kellyb8511, weight gain can lead to insulin resistance but at 24 units of levemir (you don't say how much you bolus for meals) your not exactly on high insulin doses going by your basal dose alone.

Can I ask if your under the care of your hospital diabetes team, if not then I'd ask your gp to refer you over to their care, there you will get the chance to discuss your issues and you will be able to see a dietitian as mentioned before, you need to find a diet that you can stick to, you feel happy on and enjoy eating the food.................otherwise it will always fail.

hi mumofthree3 sorry I have not been back I went a bit AWOL! I am not doing very well at all with the no carb diet and have decided to go back to just eating healthy and see what happens, although I have put on 4 pounds over the weekend :-( I am blaming that on having a couple of beers on Friday and a very large bowl of pasta! but back to the diet today start afresh and hopefully things will change. I am starting to get a bit obsessed with it all to be honest need to get rid of my scales I think as everytime I go upstairs I am weighing myself and I can gain up to 7lbs in a day

I weighed myself this morning and I am the heaviest I have ever been at 10s 3lbs this is 1 stone heavier then when I was 8 n half months pregnant!! my stomach looks like I am pregnant as well.

can you actually lose weight when taking insulin it just seems impossible and the rate I am actually gaining weight is ridiculous im scared I am going to start getting stretch marks all over my stomach as it is that rapid

I went to my doctors the other day and he said he cant do anything for me as my bmi is still in normal - I actually used to be under weight but now its creeping towards the higher end of the normal range. I even said I stopped taking my insulin again for a week but the weight didn't shift much just my eyes went poor again - if it wasn't for my eyes I would stop it right now.

I have an appointment with my diabetic consultant next week and hopefully he can help me as I am really depressed I do not want to be seen really I have avoided most social events i am extremely moody/snappy with my family my daughter even gave me some chocolate the other day and i had a bite to make her happy then went and spat it in the bin

has anyone got any success stories is there light at the end of this tunnel xxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Kelly

I think the first step is to not think of it as starting a "diet" I think that instantly puts pressure on and makes you feel restricted.

Think of it more as a decision to be healthy.

Because of stopping and starting your insulin that amount of weight gain is not unusual. When you stop your insulin your body suffers...a lot, so as soon as you introduce it again your body holds on to anything it can, insulin, fat, fluids etc.

The key here is consistency and patience. I know how hard that is trust me! I too have stayed indoors not wanting the world to see me, worn my dressing gown in the house even in summer because I couldn't bare my own reflection or the feeling of clothes against my skin.

You must get rid of the scales, weighing yourself will do nothing but make you feel bad, more desperate and more inclined to stop your insulin or binge.

It takes time for your body to reset itself and once it has the insulin you take will reduce and won't lead to so much weight gain.

Please just be patient, eat healthily, manage your sugars, allow yourself the odd treat if you can do so without it leading to a binge and stop weighing yourself.

Try and focus on other things you like about yourself and give them more value and importance than your weight.

Also know that if you make the decision and stick to it then every day going forward will be better than today.

I'm 2 and 1/2 years in so you can do It I promise, I won't lie and say it's easy but it can get so much better.

You know you can message me anytime xxxxx

ok so today i have been to the docs for annual diabetic review and i basically broke down regarding the weight gain i told her i had stopped taking insulin which she already knew as my hba1c was 16.5% she nearly started crying herself as it was the highest she had seen in her career which is over 25 years which did make me feel really bad so she has referred me to a diabetic psychologist i already have an appointment with my diabetic consultant on tuesday so she has emailed him with my problems just incase i bottle it and decide not 2 tell him (cant get out of this now!) she has also suggest i ask him what he thinks about going on metformin also

what do you guys think of metformin does it help with weight?

Thanks for all the support feeling abit more hopeful although i was hoping they could give me some miracle cure xxxx

I'm really glad that you spoke out and were honest about what's been going on.

I hope the psychologist is helpful, a combination of that and one who specialises in eating disorders would be great. (If that exists yet!!)

Good thinking for her to email ahead too.

I'm glad you are feeling more hopeful, talking about it is the first, and the biggest step.

You should be proud of yourself x
