3 Months on from T2 Diagnosis

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all well? I thought I would come back on to give you an update on my progress, also mainly to see if you could answer a few more questions for me if you would be so kind.

It is 3 months from my T2 diagnosis, my HBA1c was 120 then, it is now down to 49, which is down to my 2mg of Glemipiride and a LCHF diet I presume. I had lost over 2 stone prior to been diagnosed and now I am back up to my normal weight (80kg). My glocose levels are now almost always between 4 and 8 and very rarely go over this and I feel like I am getting used to this now.

Today I had an appointment with the Diabetic specialist at my local hospital, where she told me they are still not sure if I am type 1 or 2 still, I also saw a dietician and she has confused me a bit now with my diet requirements insisting I need to eat more Carbs. I have to return in 4 weeks with another blood test so they can determine if I am secreting any insulin or not, its all really confusing for me :(

I was also informed that my cholestorol is 5.9 so they have prescribed me Statins, also some ketostix for when my blood is high.

Any thoughts people on these figures and advice from the NHS, its not that I dont trust what they say I just want some different opinions.

Many thanks in advance

Hi and welcome back. Your readings are excellent so well done. Based on your weight loss at diagnosis and the success with Glimepride I would guess you are a LADA (Late onset T1). There are two tests that can be done, GAD and c-Peptide, to help the diagnosis. The advice most dieticians give to diabetics to have more carbs is totally wrong. It is based on incorrect thinkng about the danger of saturated fats going back to the 70s and these people have never caught up with the mis-information from the 70s. Even the saturated fat thing is wrong; they are not 'bad'. There are some good books and blogs by GPs on the subject so not all medics are mis-informed about diet.

Agree with @Daibell. Also the overall cholesterol figure is of little value compared with the breakdown (HDL, LDL, triglycerides &TChol/HDL ratio). Statins are controversial and you should read up on here and elsewhere on t'interweb and make up your own mind.
Well done on your progress!

Thank you Daibell and DeejayR, I think the best thing for me is to continue on the LCHF diet as it seems to be working for me, but maybe just cut the fat down a touch, I do seem to be eating a bit too much bacon and sausages and maybe too many nuts to be honest. WIth the Statins im really not sure what to do, below are my results from yesterday maybe these could give you a better idea.

Weight (kgs) - 80.2
BMI - 25.5
BP - 140/80
HBA1C - 49
Creatinine - 91
eGFR - 79
Cholesterol - 5.9
HDL Cholesterol - 1.8
LDL Cholesterol - 3.7
Trigs - 0.8
ACR - 0.2

Many thanks in advance for any help, would be floating around in space without this forum :)

Your cholesterol overall is a bit high but your HDL and trigs are good. I'm in the same boat. If you feel ok, you probably are. What else have we to go on except trial and testing? I just do my best.
I've lost another 3kg, down to 67, so I'll ask my GP next week if they may have misdiagnosed my T2.
