For most this seems to be the norm. I and a couple of others have fabulous GP's and I don't see a DSN my GP does the diabetic clinic. He is pro active not reactive, and very forward thinking. Few are like him I afraid, you have what seems to be the usual when it comes to diabetes.

Re: Community diabetic specialist nurses with unhelpful atti

Hi Morten1,ive been going to clinics for over 40 years. When first diagnosed in 1970 i had a fantastic doctor the best ever at my hospital and he always praised me and never said anything nasty. I was upset when he retired and i was with him for over 20 years.Everytime i visit hospital now i always see a different doctor or nurse and they never know anything about me.The nurses and dieticians dont seem to have a clue and treat you as a little naughty child!!!I have always looked after myself and know how much carbs to eat etc but when i attend hospital appointments my blood sugar is always high no matter how strict i am with my carbs and insulin regime. It really annoys me when doctor or nurse say "oh what have you been doing"If our blood sugars were perfect we would not be diabetic!!!we would not need doctors or nurses.I hate going to hospital appointments i only go to see if there is anything new in the diabetes world. If i go to my local gp about anything its always "its because you are diabetic"We also have a diabetes nurse but she doesnt know hardly anything either.

Re: Community diabetic specialist nurses with unhelpful atti

My experience is different to sugar..

Diagnosed in '89 my first consultant was awful, to the extent my GP took me out of the diabetic clinic and put me under another Endo consultant... I've only been under my diabetic clinic for 8 years with a new consultant but the team I'm under now are pretty on the ball, couldn't ask for a nicer team or a more knowledgeable team, who work with the patient and not against them..

My DSN, at my surgery is also very good, again working with the patient not against them, doesn't tell anybody what they 'have' to do... And knows her stuff.

My experience of dietitians haven't dealt with them that much over the years, but the very first one at diagnoses I do remember very well indeed, purely because she was tiny, very round with a bun on her head! Mrs Pepperpot look a like...

But I spent a week with the diabetic specialist dieticians at our clinic during my DAFNE course, and they were very good indeed, didn't push any dietary message such as carbs every meal, but a balanced health based diet, no mention to what carb amount you should or shouldn't have when... And when it came to VLC diet, wealth of information concerning this aspect..

But at the end of the day, experience and impression anybody will have will be dependant in the main on the outcome they've perceived the got...

Hello

Just curious in what way they were less than helpful, are these the people you usually see?

What did they say about the VLC diet?

Re: Community diabetic specialist nurses with unhelpful atti

We didn't spend long discussing it, because I doubt anyone of us would have taken this option, it came around because one of the Lads in the group, had decided to avoid carbs for 24 hours to check out his basal... So it flowed on from there so talked about quite openly, pit falls of ensuring that you the nutritional side right with missing a whole food group, the some of the unpleasant side effects that can be experienced, and problems around using the new insulins with it, etc...

The didn't discuss in a manner as to promote it, but nor did they discuss it in manner of total disapproval of it.. Just facts surrounding it..

Which is true, a lot of people don't realise what a VLC diet really entails nor take on board that it can be a lot harder to ensure that nutritional needs are met in an interesting and varied way, then it is abstaining from one particular food group!

Re: Community diabetic specialist nurses with unhelpful atti

Checkout www.input.me.uk take a look at the NICE Guidelines, do you fit into any of the criteria!

When I first spoke to my DSN, she looked at me said, pumps are rare as hens teeth and doubted that I would get one! But did refer me to the consultant... That was in the 8 years ago with the old NICE guidelines which wasn't so easy to work with..

It may be that you need to ask your GP to refer you to a different clinic that is more pump friendly, if you contact INPUT they will be able to tell you who the pump friendly clinics and consultants are, and if you need any help to put your case together they can help with this as well..

Another tip, is that when you get to see the consultant ask to be copied into any communication with your doctor, this way you know what they saying etc.. And you also get your results as well...

Good luck, you may have to battle, but if you do I doubt you get the battle I had to get my pump...

Thanks. It sounds from your description that they were discussing the negative facts rather more than the positive, but that is no surprise. They have probably not been taught anything else.
Is there some particular problem with vlc and new insulins, something that can't be dealt with by lowering insulin at the time of lowering carbs?
