Confused about diet

Since my diagnosis of Type 2 last week I have spent lots of time reading the posts on here but I am still a bit confused about diet.
The low carb diet seems to be popular with most people but it does seem to mean eating more protein, fatty foods and things I have not eaten for years because I have raised cholesterol .l take a statin tablet each day which keeps it down to just over 5. Would it therefore be a good idea for me to do the low carb diet as I have always kept to a low fat one until now because of the cholesterol

So what you are saying is that "I am eating a low-fat high-carbohydrate diet" but my cholesterol is still high". There is a good chance that your cholesterol is high because you are eating a high-carbohydrate diet.

In the words of Dr Richard Feinman:
"Dietary carbohydrate restriction is the single most effective method (except for total starvation) of reducing triglycerides, and is as effective as any intervention, including most drugs, at increasing HDL and reducing the number of small-dense LDL particles. Beyond lipid markers, carbohydrate restriction improves all of the features of metabolic syndrome."

Obviously you have to do your own research and talk to your Doctor (good luck with that), but the latest research suggests that swapping fats for carbohydrates has no benefit in terms cholesterol or mortality.

Hello Maybird. I am type 1 for 20 yrs and don't start to worry and torture yourself too much abut your diet. If you are already eating a low fat diet because of the cholesterol and already on statins, then please believe me when I say that as every one is different you will have to trust your judgement. As you are type 2 you need to keep weight under control, (like us all )hence reduced carbs would help that. Talk to your doc or specialist nurse and see if there is any of the diabetes courses for you to go on. It helps reassure you or teach you depending on how much you know already. No one solution for all and foods stuffs are always In one week and OUT the other. Beware of fruit as its high in sugar, and yes that old thing of exercise is pretty crucial too. Keep away from the special packaged foods that various shops do that are produced solely for diabetics (expensive and waste of money ) like some chocs for diabetics have more laxative in them and just two proper chocs are so much better anyway!! Good luck.

Hi Maybird, you may want to do some research about statins, they are dished out like sweeties from the doctors as though they are a panacea. Dr Malcolm Kendrick wrote a book about cholesterol, he says women shouldn't be on them (why have I assumed you are femle).
As for low carb its very easy especially if you et meat, it does tend to go away from what we have all been told about high fat etc. But really its all about the way we used to eat pre-packaged food. Nourishing traditions if you will - actually I have that book too.

EVERYBODY diagnosed with high cholesterol should log-on to "Zoeharcombe.com" for some facts about cholesterol , this wonderful substance that saves our lives every minute of the day. Then you should ask yourself: How can something so vital for life have such a hidden murderous agenda? The truth is, it doesn't. Lowering cholesterol is not only unnecassary, but can be dangerous. Statins have killed thousands of people.

Then you should read "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr Malcolm Kendrick, if for no other reason than the book is a fantastically funny read! But the real jaw-dropping brilliance of the book is the revelation that high cholesterol is a purely made-up disease. He explains that there is no such thing as 'good' cholesterol or 'bad' cholesterol. THERE IS ONLY ONE CHOLESTEROL. And unbelievably, it can't even be measured correctly! When you give your blood sample for the folks in white coats to analyse, they actually guess your levels! I am not making this up!!!!

The war on cholesterol is based on bad science and ignorance, and driven by the greed of the pharmaceutical industry and our doctors, no less. You won't believe how many organisations recieve bungs for promoting statins. Kendrick looks at all the evidence ever revealed about cholesterol, heart disease and statins, but he looks at it with sensible, independent eyes (he is not tied to any organisation, nor does he have to adopt guidelines laid out by government-backed organisations, and we all know how ridiculously stupid, ignorant and cold governments can be!). Kendrick uncovers nothing but lies from the people who are supposed to be looking after our well-being. I binned my statins soon after reading it and will NEVER EVER be persauded to take one again, even though my GP won't recieve his fee for my statinisation, yes, that's right, he gets a bonus! And from the drug companies no less!

Save yourselves, cos no-one else is going to. At least read it . Then you can make up your own mind.
