Hello all,

Well, I am on day three and I have to admit I nearly gave up yesterday, the first two days I suffered the most crushing headaches...migraines really. I have been drinking lots of fluids and peeing an awful lot (sorry, tmi lol !)

I have carried on with my Glimperimide 4mg at tea time, well...for now! Have been testing pre-bed and first thing and 2 hrs after meals. I have seen a steady decrease in levels even after this short time so I am hoping for a continuation of that.

Strangely, I do not feel hungry at all, I do miss fruit though as unless it is incorporated in a recipe I am not sure about the carbs in it if for instance I just want an Orange or Apple. I know Bananas are a no go. It has been hard to break the snacking, when I completed the questionnaire in the book I came out as seriously addicted to carbs!

I know I will have to look around for more meal ideas though, as there aren't that many recipes in the book I like and I imagine it will get monotonous pretty soon.

Unfortunately, my health anxiety has raised its head and I have been a bit edgy, even irritable. For example, I know little about Gout, never had it but read on Internet somewhere that a low carb diet can cause it.....but it seemed linked to eating lots of red meat (which I don't do...prefer chicken) however, my big toe on left foot is aching tonight and I am talking myself into it being Gout.....after three day for goodness sake. I hope this increase in anxiety is a temp thing.

As I said I feel fine now but I was in head pain to the point where I was sick several times, I used to have Migraines so maybe it triggered them.

I have also noticed my eyesight is much less blurred, really positive about it all now and hope to keep on it. Try to resist getting on the scales until a week is up!

Onwards and upwards.

an apple or orange is going to be 10 to 12 gm of carb - that is a lot if you are trying to reverse diabetes.
If you are concerned about gout then a few cherries might help, they contain a substance which helps in the excretion of the uric acid - the crystals are what inflames the joints.
Turmeric and black pepper together are supposed to be an excellent treatment for inflamed joints.

Hi Geminigirl - Can I suggest you ask Dr Google about "Carb Flu". Quite a lot of folks get it, when making a significant shift in diet.

Hopefully, you might identify with what you find. Annoyingly, the best way to deal wit Carb Flu is to stick with the reduced carbs, and your body will get the hang of it; usually in a few days.

If you are very concerned, then seek a medical opinion.

Hi Geminigirl - great that you are doing the MM BS diet - I shall follow your progress with great interest. (I currently recommend it to interested folks, as it makes a lot of sense, but I don't actually know anyone who tried it.)

Re your low-carb flu signs - I was just about to suggest it and DCUKMod got it in :) so all good.

The simple answer to low-carb flu is to up your healthy fats, and increase your salt (in relation to how carb you are going.)

Also, what are the chances you aren't a bit addicted to sugar? (and wheat?) As in, there is evidence that sugar lights up the dopamine/pleasure centres in the brain when we eat it. And the headaches and hangover feeling is actually a kind of withdrawal. Ghastly idea I know. And we have gut bacteria and so on that live off of the glucose, and are really keen that you get back to eating it! (The gut biome idea.) And you need time for your gut biome to change, and stop crying out to you, 'Eat sweet things!' :). (And can make you feel bad when those sweet-loving bacteria and pathogens and so on start dying off in big numbers.) And yeah, the answer to that, especially as a diabetic is to stick with it. You'll come right when your body has adapted to this new way of eating. If you can stand it, and have the time - go for a walk or a swim or whatever physical activity works for you? That's what I did when I had low-carb flu, and it made it go a lot better.

I suffered the most crushing headaches

Could be all sorts of things, even stressing out about things. Good idea to drink adequate amounts of liquid.

I am not sure about the carbs in it if for instance I just want an Orange or Apple.

If you haven't got a book of carbs and calories, just google, I'd be lost without google.

For example, I know little about Gout, never had it but read on Internet somewhere that a low carb diet can cause it.

Four years of low carb (40gms per day usually) and I have no sign of Gout, only much improved general health for the main part.

Try to resist getting on the scales until a week is up!

Interesting point, I know all the dieting organisations recommend weighing once a week, but you have to tell yourself that the numbers you see don't always reflect success or failure. They certainly don't always reflect more or less fat. For example this morning I am 3 pounds heavier than last Monday and if the dieticians are correct, that would require me to have eaten an extra 10,500 calories to gain 3 pounds in weight. The theory being that one pound is the equivalent of 3500 calories. I don't even eat 1500 calories a day, never mind an extra 1500 calories.

The numbers on the scale will be affected by fluid retention and slow intestinal transit times. In my efforts to follow a Newcastle regime I know that meat will certainly slow things down as will taking cocodomol which, as I take the soluble type, which has loads of salt, also causes fluid retention. I also take GiSol along with Vit C (powder) which normally sorts out slow transit times.

Keep up the good work and don't expect anything overnight.

Touch Wood I suffered with Gout for many years, but have not had an attack since diagnosis 18 months ago. Purines seem to be one of the enemies. I found this out by a food diary.
I suffer at Christmas, holidays and when it is Asparagus season (I eat it every day)
But now my weight has dropped, no problems.

I am about two thirds through the book the 8 week blood sugar diet and it is most interesting.
All the best for you on this - I think that the first week will be the worse, but at the same time you should see the results in BG levels and that will hopefully motivate you. I would steer clear of all snacking, particularly fruit and stick quite rigidly to the meal plan and calories. Easy for me to say - I would struggle like heck to stick to it.

Do keep posting - it is fascinating to read about those who are plucky enough to try these things - and well done.
