Interested to know if black coffee alone does this to anyone. Happens to me, had to give it up.

Was the coffee raising your sugars first thing in the morning or any time of day?

Any time of day at all. I used to think it was the milk, then tried soy milk, then just gave it up. Same with diet It has caffeine in as well. Am now having decaff soy latte (1g carb/100ml.), Miss coffee a lot, but it was making my anxiety worse I think as well. One once in a while would be nice though. Used to take bg up by 3mmol within 20 mins.

I guess we are all different. I gave up a pretty big diet coke habit recently and my sugars have gone up without the caffeine. I am not sure if it is lack of caffeine or if it is lack of aspartame doing it. Sounds weird but artificial sugars apparently can cause insulin release but with no carbs present. I for sure have hyperinsulinemia and thought if I cut it out my insulin might lower. Seems like I was right but higher BG's is the consequences. Won't know for sure until I get another c-peptide done. Would plain decaff work for you to get at least the coffee taste?

Thanks, I think it was the lift coffee used to give me. Not the taste really. No bad thing giving it up. Had not heard that about aspartame, uh uh may have to give up the caffeine free sugar free coke now!

Drinking caffeine makes my heart race and brain buzz so I don't do it. Anything that puts your body under stress can put your blood glucose level up. For this reason I imagine it would put my blood glucose up if I drank it now.

Caffeine makes my blood sugar rise really fast- can't even have a square of 80 or 90% dark chocolate without having serious jitters. Trying to check my blood sugar levels is really difficult then, too, because when I try to prick my finger I somehow goof it up and have to poke around 5 or 6 times just to find out my blood sugar is suddenly around 200. I miss coffee and chocolate but no way can I handle any slip ups.

Make the switch to Decaff coffee, if you buy a good quality brand you won't be able to tell the difference apart from the caffeine kick.

I drink black and green decaf tea without sweetener(no milk added). No significant change on my BG. Don't drink diet. I like sparkling water though and have some every once in a while.

I'm sensitive to coffee so only used to drink one cup of decaff a day. But even that would sometimes keep me awake.
Then I stumbled across the fact that while it didn't impact my blood glucose, it was driving my blood pressure up into hypertension.

So now I am coffee, tea and any caffeine free, with the knock on effect that my high blood pressure is a thing of the past too.

I do not notice any effect on my BG from coffee or caffeine, but I have never consumed a huge amount at any stage, and now prefer to use the best beans I can afford, and probably only have 5 cups a week.

The amount of Caffeine and Sugar being consumed daily due to the Western worlds current obsession with Coffee will not end well, that's for certain.

I read something recently about how we might all be giving up coffee soon anyway - if global warming is happening (I'm not getting into that argument), then coffee will become extinct as it requires a very specific temperature range to grow:

Then I stumbled across the fact that while it didn't impact my blood glucose, it was driving my blood pressure up into hypertension.

I drink a mug of strong coffee with double cream in the morning. I don't think it affects my bs levels - I had read on here that the cream should stop liver dump in the morning.
But having got a BP monitor I have found it does send my blood pressure up a lot, though it does then fall during the next few hours.
I don't drink coffee after midday usually as it does keep me awake if I do.
My GP has told me to cut down the cream because of my cholesterol level so I might have it with full fat milk or hazelnut milk.

What do you add in your cup of coffee/tea? sweeteners? Milk? Do you drink after a meal or with a snack?

How long should one ideally wait before testing after drinking coffee? I read it is 2 hours after first bite for food, but presumably that is too long for coffee/liquids?
I don't drink a lot of coffee, just a couple of espresso Nespresso's in the morning which means the caffeine is quite intense.

I think it is a question of testing and seeing.

I used to think that coffee affected by blood pressure only a little - because I tested it at 2 hours (just like I would test my blood glucose)

Then I accidently discovered that the bp rise came 5-10 hours later, not 2 hours. That was a revelation. More careful testing revealed that the bp rise actually lasted 3 days, with the peak around 7 hours after drinking that one cup. I would NEVER have spotted this, if I hadn't been willing to check it out myself. The doc would NEVER have spotted it either - just kept prescribing the pills.

So basically, never assume. Test until you feel you have covered all your bases, and then test again. That way, you will know the full situation.
