I AM CURED!!!!! In July 2004 I was using 300 units Humax insulin to control my type 2 diabetes. As my eyes were being affected, I did some research and paid for a private Duodenal Switch bariatric operation (I was denied the op on the NHS as I was 61) in Belgium in August 2004. I went from 24 stone down to 11.5 stone within months, my BMI was 55, it went to 28. Within 4 days of the op I ceased to need any medication at all. I can eat what I like, but with 75% of stomach removed, and fats and protein being malabsorbed, I take care or else I get diarrhoea. My glucose level is stable at 5.6 regardless of whether I have just eaten. My GP, diabetic and other consultants, even the DVLA agree that I no longer have diabetes and my full driving licence was reinstated. Unfortunately, I still suffer from foot neuropathy (had 2 toes amputed last year) and ED, but my eyesight improved.
