How long do gp's usually take to get a diabetic into system? I was diagnosed type 2 last week, wasn't given any info or appointments just told they will try diet control first and ill be put into system, no word on any follow up appointments

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Did you have any instructions from your Practice as to what diet control entails?

Do you know what your blood test results were?

I'm not really aware of how diet controlled diabetics are cared for by their GP's so hope somebody with experience will be slong soon.

Hi, it really depends how much you are willing to change your eating, most T2 cant handle carbs, so they are reduced..it's good you have a meter and it will get you off to a fast start
I cut all grain grain product, potato and fruit till I got ok numbers ..then put some back in slowly

Scary isn't it when you are left floundering...

I would assume that the time it takes to get you all your general checkups, foot and eye tests etc, will depend on when you can be seen by the relevant people, and maybe how bad they think your glucose levels, etc, are. My first appointments were spread over about three months all told, but it was nearly eight before I finally saw our surgery's diabetic "expert" (who was a complete waste of my time) as opposed to my normal GP, who advised met to try the Atkins diet, and prescribed metformin for me. almost immediately after diagnosing me

I think in general, you'll get more support and more accurate and helpful dietary advice about reducing your glucose levels from people on the forum than from your Practice people.

I agree with everything @Robbity says.

You could try ringing the surgery and asking to speak to whoever usually handles the diabetic patients (most likely a nurse). They may ring you back.

You could ask all your questions then.

Otherwise it's an agonising wait, isn't it?

To echo one of the other posters on here, it takes a while to get you into the system. I was diagnosed in June this year and had a chat with my GP at that point (partly, I suspect, because he is a family friend as well) and had my first review appointment with the Practice Diabetic Nurse in September (but no podiatrist as yet), following a second round of blood tests. I am in the middle of two half days of Diabetic Education right now (background stuff last weekend, dietician and foot care this coming Saturday) and have an appointment in December for a retinal scan.

So - it takes a while to get everything going. The Education course that I'm on is at a hospital ten miles away. I asked why I couldn't go on one of the courses that are run at the hospital half a mile from my house, to be told that I could, but would have to wait until the new year because that was the earliest course with places available. It's the old problem of resources versus demand. All of the people who have seen me have been helpful and supportive (albeit I don't always agree with what they are saying) but a lot of people, including me, seem to be left in a limbo for two or three months (or more), to fret without support, having been given some pretty unwelcome news.

I've found this forum very helpful, both for finding out stuff that I was uncertain about and for being reassured by other people who have been through the same experience. Like every forum I have ever seen, there are some fairly opinionated people on here, eager to share their worldview with you, so a pinch of salt is sometimes required :) .....but they are very much in the minority.

I think it depends on ur GP and their efficiency. If you're not happy then make an appointment or even just a telephone appointment, to talk it through
