Type 1 How to check babies for T1?

Can anyone recommend urine test strips suitable for testing babies occasionally? I’ve read a few times that diabetic parents check their baby’s urine a few times a year which we’d like to do as several T1s in the family but when you Google test strips it just comes up with strips to test a million different things! Any suggestions? Many thanks.

I’m afraid there is nothing you can do to prevent Type 1 diabetes.

Lots would disagree! Prebiotics etc for kiddies can arguably delay/prevent, lots of positive trials going on :) Some also try to avoid formula/gluten early in life - lots of debate on these….

I'd just get one that tests blood sugar as part of a lot of different things. Some of them say they're 'as used by gp's' or words to that effect. Check how long they last when opened though.

I tried and couldn’t find any evidence of those who say T1 can be prevented. Not being rude or antagonistic I’m just very interested in this. Can you post links for trials etc. :)

Google away my friend! Try “probiotics to prevent type 1” and you’ll get lots of things like this….. my baby has been on probiotics since birth in the hope it will help I very much believe a healthy gut is key….

Also….. it’s key for me personally to find out early if any offspring have diabetes as with an aunt, sister and offspring they would then do a genetic test to see if is one of the rare types that actually can be treated as I understand

Thanks… do you know if blood sugar readings for one year olds are the same for adults? I know at birth they can be much lower and that’s healthy….?

Thanks for the links both, interesting, seems the trials are still in the early days and they are saying that at the moment T1 can’t categorically be prevented, but what a wonderful thing it will be when the time comes, and I’m sure it will

My niece’s blood sugars started to go out of range and she saw specialists who put her on vitamins and probiotics and they went back in range - it’s def worth trying if anyone gets a young T1 in early stages

Is there any reason to suggest babies need special urine test strips?

Not a personal recommendation, but if you can't get an answer from your doctor or a better answer here, I would go with one of the suggestions from https://bnf.nice.org.uk/medical-devices/urine-glucose-testing-strips/urine-glucose-testing-strips/

Must confess, when I suspected I had developed diabetes, I just went onto Amazon and searched and just picked one and ended up with https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HPUWILW/

Good morning. My background is Paediatric Nursing. No need for different urine test strips for babies.
Same ones do for all ages

Good luck
