Hi I was diagnosed type 2 in 1999 and gradually was introduced to metformin then gliclazide . Sugar levels crept up, tried the atkins diet a few years ago, sugar levels fine again. Health problems escalated , triple bypass surgery 28th march this year. While in hospital my sugar levels rose dramatically,28s. had several insulin injections to rectify
.Gp checked with surgeon who advised him to put me on lantus. I now have stiff joints and back pain. Anyone had similar
experience or can offer some insight.
Thanks
Brian

Hi, I'm on Lantus and never had the issue however there was someone who was posting on the forums about 4 months ago that appeared to have the same issue. The thread seemed to last for a while, maybe you can find it or someone else here remembers.
I would suggest you try another type of Long Acting Insulin to see if the discomfort continues. I'll also see if I can find that thread, never really searched for anything on this site before so we will see ...

I found the thread - /forum/threads/insulins-and-lantus-side-affects.116759/ or just search on Lantus Side Affects in the search feature of the forums and it should come up or if you cut past the path above after http://www.diabetes.co.uk/ it should get you there. Good luck!

Brian, I am having shoulder and arm pain and was told I had frozen shoulder. The Dr said this was common in diabetics. I never understood how this could of happened because I am constantly raising my arms at my work. After doing some reading on my pain I began to wonder if it was because of my insulin. My pain started in Sept. 2016 after being on Lantus for 6 mths, and almost a year later I am still in a lot of pain. After doing some research I found that Lantus causes muscle and joint pain. I have a couple of weeks till my next Dr appointment and I am going to request a different insulin. Hopefully this will end my pain.

I am 64 and have been on Lantus for 20 odd years. As soon as I started on Lantus my control improved noticeably. I had no idea about its side effects. Had a frozen shoulder about 2 years ago. You put it down to aches and pains of getting older. The GP or the diabetic nurse never suggested any link to Lantus. But then as a long term type 1 diabetic you come to rely on and appreciate marvels of modern medicines. The trouble is everything prescribed has some side effect, be it BP tablets, Statins or whatever. Unfortunately we have little choice but to keep taking them. Otherwise as the Doctor says, your life span would diminish significantly, and the NHS is here to ensure that doesn't happen!

Brianhypno, hi and Glucobabu. I have been on Lantus for about 8 years but had shoulder rotation pain for some time before that. Then about 6 years ago, I developed symptoms of what was eventually diagnosed as PMR. In the meantime before diagnosis, I read about people laying blame for aches and pains as Luntus's feet and I tried a change to Levemir, with no effect so went back to Lantus. After the PMR treatment started, and now ended, all the former shoulder pain went as well and has not returned.

The thing is, I think, it's easy to connect unconnected things sometimes so it's always best to get a clear diagnosis and try to work out what, if any, connection there may be and not jump to conclusions.

More likely the statin side affects Brian.

I haven't experienced that myself, but a friend found that she had pain that started in her shoulders and went right through her whole body shortly after starting insulin. She didn't connect it with Lantus for several years, but once she came off Lantus, the pain slowly disappeared until she was completely pain-free after a few months. She actually switched to beef insulin.

I am on Lantus. I'd much rather be on Levemir, but I develop a reaction to it when I inject (welts that last a week) so I am sticking with Lantus for now.

I am also on Lanctus and Gliclazide and have back, knee and shoulder pain. Have been told it is drug related. Not much fun I agree.

Hi @brianhypno. I was put on Lantus 4 years ago with Novorapid after Mixtard 30/70 failed, and there have been no side effects.
