My story

Hello all

I'm Danish, born and bred, and I'm 61 years old.
I was diagnosed with T2 two years ago and was immediately put on 3x500mg Metformin plus Simvastatin. The diagnosis was unexpected as there is no diabetes in my family, and I have always been underweight.

The doctors and nurses never told me anything about diet, and in the two years they never asked me what I eat.
The first six months I slept twenty hours a day, and the rest of the time my head never cleared up. My leg muscles ached and I could hardly move. I lost even more weight.
After six months I finally woke up long enough to realize that something was wrong. I stopped taking Simvastatin, and after two weeks my head was clear and the aches were gone.

Then I started to investigate on the net, and luckily I found this great site, which I am so grateful for. Once I learned about lchf and read all the good advice from you wonderful people, I was on the right track. My Hba1c went down and down, and the doctors were amazed. They still did not ask what I was eating, and I didn't tell them.

For the last nine months my Hba1c has been 38, and I am down to 1x500mg Metformin. My cholesterol is sky high but I refuse to take any more statins.
Recently when I had my blood tested, I told the nurse that my goal was to get off Metformin altogether. She said that she had never heard of anyone doing that, and that she did not think the doctor would let me.
A week later I told the GP the same thing. After thinking about it, she said that I could try it out for three months.

This was a few days ago, and I'm walking around with a big smile on my face, and I even catch myself jumping around like a rabbit.
I'm so happy, I'm about to burst.
Today is my first day without Metformin.

This is not my native language, so please ignore wrong grammar and other oddities.

My total cholesterol is very high, but my individual breakdowns are reasonably good - I've read that the triglyceride divided by HDL-C ratio is the most important predictor of CVD risk (in lieu of the kind of advanced testing that doesn't seem to get done much outside the USA). Mine is well below the recommended level, so I'm not concerned.

Especially since there's good evidence that higher levels are protective for women - in fact the older you get, the higher they are, the more protected you are against all-cause mortality.

Congratulations on taking charge of your health.

Lol! Välkommen! There are loads of scandi speakers on this forum! I too aim to get rid of my metformin eventually - awesome result and well done! There is a Swedish forum http://forum.kostdoktorn.se which is LCHF if you are interested. The blogg is one of the largest in Sweden and is the baby of Andreas Eenfeldt, a doctor specialising in diabetes and obesity from Karlstad. Totto, a Swede who posts loads on this forum and is very helpful, pointed me in that direction. I emailed the good doc when I first started and he responded very quickly. Look forward to hearing about you progress! :)

Hej Scandichic. :)
Thanks for the links. I do know of Andreas Eenfeldt, and I will certainly have a closer look at the two sites.
One of my concerns is how to put on weight while eating LCHF. Maybe I should try LCVHF, Low Carb Very Hig Fat.;)
I hope you will succeed in getting off the Metformin. I hope we both will.

Hej Anne. Did they not offer you other statins? Simvastatin affects a lot of people this way and I had a similar problems. I have changed back to Atorvastatin and so far, haven't had any problems. The GP also told me if I do, there are a couple of other statin types they can try. I htink it is a matter of finding the right type.

Also, you can lower your cholesterol by being selective with the types of fat you eat. Red meats will raise it much more than poultry of fish for example. It is all about experimenting and finding a balance.

They did offer me other statins, but the thought of the same thing happening again scares me. I live alone and there is no one to tell me that something is wrong. In that state I am not able to manage my diabetes, and I would lose even more weight. My muscles are damaged from the last time, so I can't afford to lose more muscle.
A couple of months ago I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which means going to a hospital in another city every few weeks for treatment and checkups. I couldn't do that either.
My diabetes, my muscles, and my arthritis are more important to me than my cholesterol levels.

Spoken to dn and doc today. Looks like they might reduce meds. Yay! Glad you liked the other website! Have you looked at the LCHF recepter yet! Have lovely recipe for Thai soup!

Hej Anne!

That sounds great. Congrats.
I had a look at the recipe site, but didn't have time to go through it all today. It's huge. I found some interesting bread recepies. A few days ago I made a bread from flax meal for the first time. It looked like chocolate sponge cake, had the texture of rye bread, but had no taste. The only good thing about it was that it was very filling.

Hej Totto

I think Danish is a lot easier to read than hear! I have attached my fave Thai cod recipe from LCHF for you. I am on a high now having lost a further 1lb taking my weight loss to 1 stone 10lbs (10 kg which is 10 whole bags of sugar!) . Can only attach as photo so looks like it will have to be good old fashioned copy and paste.

10kg weight loss? Well done! :)
Thanks for the recipe. Apart from the peppers, which I can't stand, it looks really good.
You are absolutely correct about my language. Danes are so laid-back that they don't bother pronouncing any word clearly.
The Danish TV series, you Brits seem to like; are now being subtitled in Danish because the actors are impossible to understand.

I always remember the first time I heard Danish. I was sitting in a class at uni and this "poor " lady answered a question. I turned to my Finnish friend and said " that poor woman. It must be so difficult with such a bad speech impediment . She's really struggling to get that sentence out." There was a moments silence, then my friend, who had a Danish partner, turned to me and said , as if speaking to someone who wasn't that bright, "she's Danish!" Oops.

Welcome to the forum.

Have you or your doctor considered whether you might actually not have T2? Your case sounds very similar to mine - underweight, high cholesterol and similar horrible reactions to to Simvastatin. You might consider being investigated for the various kinds of monogenic diabetes, including MODY and monogenic diabetes.

Hello kesun

There is not much dialogue between my doctor and me. She is a GP and I don't think she has much knowledge of diabetes.
Every time I visited the clinic in these past 2 years, I asked what my numbers were, but never got them. She would only say that they were lower than last time. Now there is a new nurse, and she told me.
I am not sure what the response would be if I questioned the diagnosis.

I don't know how it works in Denmark. It used to be in England that you needed the doctor's consent to see your own results (not sure whether this was law or individual GP decision), but now they have to give them to you if you ask. I don't bother to ask my GP, I just tell the receptionist that I need them. Might that work for you?

Can you easily go to another GP? It doesn't sound to me as if your current one is meeting your needs. If you happen to have the same condition as I do, metformin is (a) no use, as mine involves insulin insufficiency not insulin resistance, and (b) contra-indicated because of the risk of lacto-acidosis. It's not worth taking risks with your health just because your GP doesn't keep up with new medical information.
