As said above, Metformin helps only to a limited extent by reducing the amount of natural glucose our livers produce in times of fasting, exercise, stress etc. when it thinks we need a burst of energy. Many firms give meters away for free then charge exorbitant prices for the strips, The Codefree is about the cheapest. Try here for the Codefree meter http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/ and here for the extra strips http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/ Pharmacies don't sell them. There are discount codes if you buy in bulk 5 packs 264086 10 packs 975833 I was diagnosed with an HbA1c of 53 and Metformin was never mentioned, but I have since discovered my own Practice prescribes it for HbA1cs above 53, but no-one forces you to take it.
