Will insulin pump auto correct hyperglycaemia?

Hi all, currently being considered for insulin pump therapy, was wondering if a pump sme could confirm the following?

Apologies if frequently asked but…
1. Does a pump auto correct hyperglycaemia?
2. Does a pump correct erroneous bolus doses?
3. Does a pump help within snacking between meals (this I am guilty of), if so how?

Thanks in advance,
T

Hi @ironman81
Alone, a pump is just another way of dispensing insulin, It has a few advantages over injecting
- it can inject very small amounts (down to 0.05 units of insulin)
- it can vary your basal throughout the day to address things like dawn phenomenon
- it is typically, easier to correct mistakes - press a few buttons on the pump of the controller rather than digging out your insulin pen
- it usually has a bolus calculator

If you also have a CGM which the pump can talk to, it can implement Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL). This will adjust the basal dose based upon your BG - increase your basal if your BG is going high or suspend your basal if it is going low.

However, you still need to carb count a give yourself a bolus dose of insulin for meals. And snacks!

Some pumps combined with a cgm will correct highs, but can take time todo that.. nothing like getting it right in the first place

Snacking.. if you tell the pump how many carbs you are snacking on then it will issue the insulin for that snack…. In the same way you should on injections.. if you don’t tell it you are eating you will go high then it will try to correct.. but as above corrections take longer than getting it right in the first place

There is currently no wear and forget pump, they take work.. probably more so than injecting but the end results can be improved hba1c

Hello @ironman81

Have you been given any idea of what pumps are available ? If not ask your DSN, once you know then you can do your research and start working out which one would suit you best.
