Hi all,

I’ve been lurking and reading for a while now and finally decided to join up. I’ve been pre-diabetic for about 10 years - controlled with exercise and diet pretty well until about a year ago when it spiralled out of control. I started feeling ill and tired and dropped almost 30 lbs in 2 months. I was running super high (14mmol to over 20mmol) for who knows how long. Doc put me on Metformin and I got a bg monitor (Verio OneTouch). My A1c dropped to 13.4.. so doc added Jardiance. I’ve been working hard on changing my diet too.

I finally got in to see an endocrinologist and she changed my medication, off Jardiance and on gliclazide and dapagliflozin.. which I started 2 days ago with the metformin

Ok.. long, sorry. So I am only testing once a day because strips are stupid expensive. I had a fasting/morning reading of 10.5mmol. This has been somewhat normal for me though I know it’s still high.

Today, about lunch time I became RAVENOUSLY hungry and felt shaky-a little dizzy. I tested and was 5.7mmol - the lowest I have been since getting the monitor. I got scared and wolfed down a burger and some fries and half a soda.

I had to lie down for a few hours and have been drinking a lot of water… tested again 2 hours after I ate and I’m at 7.4mmol.

So I’ve been ‘normal’ but i feel ill. Tired, buzzy, headache. I’ve been so set on getting my BG under control and now this?

I don’t understand why I feel worse. If anyone has any experience, or insight, or knowledge I would appreciate it.

Thanks

False low. Its due to body being used to higher levels. Can take a few weeks to get used to lower levels.you may find when feel lower eyesight can be blurry that should pass if experience that.

Slow and steady changes it's a Marathon not a sprint.

You can also feel thirsty tired if high sugars guzzling soda (regular) won't be doing any favours. Better off drinking sugar free.

Hard not to feel scared with lower than your normal levels.

You can get a free dexcom CGM sample lasts 10days one time. Which monitor's your glucose levels that may give you some more confidence abbots freestyle libre do a 15 day free trial usually that's currently on hold would recremmended cgm after your used to a new 'normal' best wishes

Hi type 2 here and that was very similar to my story use BG machine and Hba1c which to start off with was 129 then on metformin had to come back down to 1 a day (Bad side effects) use insulin now (2 types). what seemed like an age before I started getting lower results. Had similar thing "false hypos" because my body was not used to lower blood sugar. the numbers were not low enough to be a proper hypo. I was told take 4 jelly babies with you wherever you go which do work had same with eyesight which I found very scary intill I asked an optician Do not give up it does stop after a while it does seem to take ages. The nurse said had I brought your levels down fast your body not have been able to cope with a a rapid change

Yes, I agree these are false lows. Your body will get used to being lower after a while and you will start to feel better.

Just one other point. As you are on Gliclazide which can cause true lows your GP should prescribe you a meter and testing strips now. The official advice is to test your blood sugar before you drive. Don’t start to drive if you are lower than 5.
