Hi all
one year since since diagnosis and had my annual checkup at gp with diabetic nurse and had an armful of blood to see if my ceramic filters are still working and my liver is working as designed and my feet ears toes fingers and other parts are still attached and also that i can still get an erection.....!!!!

Phoned up for results today and got the usual receptionist who has no idea on how to interpret the results but did manage to get out that hb1ac was 5.9 and cholesterol was 5.8 and everything elase was ok...i am seeing the consultant next week so will get him to show me the results but am pleased anyway. hb1ac has gone from 12.8 to 7.5 to 5.7to 5.7 and now 5.9 in the space of 12 months. Am a bit peed of it has gone up on the last one and am slightly concernerd at the cholesterol level which has gone up depsite more healthy eating. Is 5.8 exceptionally high and something i should be looking into as it say the the uk average is 5.7. is it related to weight as well as my weight is creeping on since diagnosis although steady and the same as 3 months ago according to nurse. What are the problems and concerns in taking statins for cholesterol and are there any alternatives?
12 lantus at 23.00 and 3, 5 , and 5 to 7 novorapid per day.

Cheers

Is it appropriate to say happy anniversary?

I'm not too good on cholesterol as i have no idea what mine is and didn't realise maybe i should be until a little while ago,
so i have no idea about statins..

but just wanted to say Hba1c is very good, i wish i had one like yours :!:

although i can understand your frustration in it rising..

oh yes and glad to hear none of your body parts have dettached themselves

Congrats on your A1c! Also very glad your ceramic filters are still working...

When I was diagnosed we'd just been at Spaghetti House so my dad thought it would be a nice traditin to celebrate this anniversary by going back there every year. Weirdo. By my calculations he still owes me 21 visits... Good job I really don't like pasta and have no intention if cashing that in!

I wouldn't worry about going from 5.7 to 5.9, as long as you don't continue on an upward trend. Cholesterol level for diabetics is recommended to be 4 or less. But a lot depends on your ratio of HDL to LDL. If you search the site there's a lot of info on this that I can't remember offhand, sorry! Ask your doctor for the HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels, they should have done a complete lipid profile. There's also lots of info here on reducing it. Lots of people seem to benefit from reducing carbs. Oats, olive oil and certain B vitamins may also help. And not smoking obviously. I know someone who reduced his cholesterol by drinking one of those benecol things every other day. I know it says you need 4 benecol products a day but I suspect that's just marketing. Asda dies a version that's basically the same but loads cheaper.

Do you carb count? Have you ever done a Dafne course? Keep up the good work!

Curleous,

These are the target numbers taken from Jan-Feb issue of Balance:

HDL: 1mmol/l or above for men; 1.2mmol/l or above for women

LDL: below 2mmol/l

Triglycerides: equal to or below 1.7mmol/l

Total cholesterol: below 4mmol/l

Hope the above is useful, here is some advice on reducing cholesterol levels from the charity HEART UK:

Hi Curleous,

Happy anniversary!!

The only alternative for statins is watching what you eat and how you cook things (dry-frying or using low cal spray etc). There are a few sorts of statins you can take for cholesteral. I used to take avastatin but it gave me heartburn and indigestion so it was changed to pravastatin which hasn't give me any problems but to be honest they dont really keep it low because you still have to be careful with the food.

My dr advised that so long as the triglycerides( which he said were the bad fats)were below 1.7mmol then not to worry.

I don't think 5.8 is exceptionally high but you dr will discuss with you if there is a need to take the statins, if you don't feel comfortable taking them speak to the dietitician at your next appointment to try and work out a low fat diet plan and see the statins as a last resort.

Hope all goes well
