30 years today!

Happy (?!) 30th anniversary to me today. Don't recall much in detail about the very early days as was only 4, but my mum pulled out a photo of the first blood glucose machine I had and it was like a brick! Also had to borrow it from the hospital for a max 3 month period as it was in excess of £200 to buy one, and that took time to save.

How much has changed in that time!
 
Hello and a happy diaversity to you. You must of seen so many changes in your life from being a toddler, teenager and then an adult ? I have 4 years of catching up to do. But well done, is that you in your avatar ? and you look so well and healthy, nice photo

Well done Kaz, 30 years is a long time

Guessing the bg meter you are referring to is the Reflolux S, it was like a brick compared to modern bg meters and my how times have changed, it would take take 2 mins to do a bg test with the Reflolux S compared to just a few seconds now.
 
It was 'interesting' coping as a teenager!! Would be nice to wind the clock back and give my 16 year old self a bit of a talking to, but then I probably still wouldn't listen

Thanks for the wishes everyone! My unusually thoughtful diabetes even bought me an anniversary card (suspect hubby may've had something to do with it?!). Guess it's trying to make up for some of the ups & downs. It didn't buy me any chocolates, that's for sure, lol
 
God, yes, it took forever And, boy, did you need a big drop of blood!! Poor little fingers took quite a battering sometimes

Congratulations, I have my 32 year diaversity on Saturday. I always remember the date and even the time of my diagnosis (5pm). Hope you get to the next 30 years successfully but maybe without the diabetes if we're all super lucky.

But wasn't it much better than using the Clinitest Kits

It was messy as you had to wipe the blood off the strip with a piece of cotton wool after the first minute then place the strip in the meter and wait another minute, but at the time it was state of the art stuff and was life-changing in so many ways.
 
Well done Kaz on 30 years.

I remember saving up for my Reflolux S brick sized meter, I got a £25 cheque back from the company as it was on offer at £175.00. What a bargain!

Was it the only meter that you have ever bought Flowerpot, I paid for my Reflolux S then never paid for one since.

Yes, that was the only meter I've ever paid for. You got a lot of meter for the money and it did last a good few years . I wish I'd kept it along with my Clinitest pipette and test tube kit.

Me too.

I'm sure Robert72 still has his Reflolux S meter somewhere at home, tbh at the time I was just so pleased to throw the Clinitest Kit out when I got my first bg meter.
 

Congratulations hope all is well.

I'm only 3 months in, and judging by what I've seen recently, I hate to think how little the medical fraternity must of known about diabetes in those days.

Ooh, goodness, hope you didn't spend that 25 quid all at once! Imagine asking people to pay that kind of money now - they'd laugh! But, yes, the only thing we had. How clueless we were right at the start though - I remember it reading 'Hi', and my poor mum, bless her, thought it was the machine starting up with a greeting......................
