30 years today

It is 30 years ago today that I was diagnosed with type one diabetes. I was on the verge of leaving secondary school and I had all the classic symptoms losing weight excessive thirst and constantly passing water. When I went to the Dr he said I had a mouth infection and prescribed me some mouthwash ( I know what you're thinking I couldn't believe it either). After a few days I could hardly stand up I felt so weak I was rushed to hospital and that was when my life changed forever. I was told I had type one diabetes and that I would need to take insulin injections every day to keep me alive. It was a hell of a lot to take in. The rest as they say is history. Although one thing I was told at the time was that a cure should be found within 10 years. Well it has been a long 10 years and we r still waiting doing the best I can just like everyone else. It has been a real struggle at times but live in hope that a cure will be found sooner rather than later.
 
Hi Steve, I would like to wish you a 'happy diaversary day', 30 years, wow. I know what you mean by waiting for a cure or even something less invasive, or stopping it in it's tracks, would be fantastic, I live in hope too. I am only 3 years behind you and the years seem to go by so fast.

Feels weird to say congratulations!! But lovely to hear that someone is still going strong even after 30years!! X
 
Hi @steveo4 - 30 years is a long time - I really don't know what the appropriate words are to say here, but I would say that you deserve a huge pat on the back for three decades of, as you put it, doing the best you can!

That - apart from a cure - is all that we can do. Thank you for sharing your story - it's made me feel unexpectedly emotional as I have my own 30 year anniversary next month, and I don't know how I'm going to really feel about it.

congrats. i have had it for 50. But lets face it if a cure was found it would be bought up by the money guy's and shelved or it would be sold for £1000000 a cure
 
Happy Anniversary! My 30 yrs was in March, diagnosed at age 3 after a virus and like you my Dr was always telling us there would be a cure "by the time you're 10" then 20, then 30 etc - still waiting! One day hopefully!
 
I just want to say, as someone who has only been diagnosed for 5 weeks, you guys are an absolute inspiration! Thank you.
 
I've had it for 41 years, since I was 7. I can't really remember what it was like to not be diabetic. I think that even if/when they do find a cure, it won't be for us oldies. The poor children who are diagnosed deserve a normal life ahead of them.

To be honest as a parent to a young son who hasn't (yet!!) been diagnosed I kind of hope they concentrate on a cure for the just diagnosed / young. It would stop his Mum and I going into parent panic mode every time he has a lot to drink / slightly wetter nappies than normal!!
 
Congratulations! Received my gold medal last week for 50 years as a diabetic.

Strange.. I feel I'm having a normal life. Granted I'm mindful of my condition & can't take it lightly.
it will be 40 years for me in July.diagnosed on my 8th birthday by a nurse on a kiddie ward my mum knew, as a second opinion. & admitted immediately..
The first "opinion"? Our GP at the time. I was dying on my feet & the guy fobbed us off.

Can I just say @steveo4 & @Amandast yer both looking great on it.!
 
Hi guys!congratulations to you all on getting by for so long with this condition!I am 15 years diagnosed today and as someone who has struggled with it for years and lived through 2 DKA episodes I feel almost triumphant today that I've got this far!if I can do as well as ye in another 15 years I'll be a very happy lady!
 
My 30 year anniversary is in September and funnily enough when I was brought to my GP by my mother, who thought I had anorexia or even worse leukemia cos I'd lost so much weight and looked so bad he said I was run down and gave me iron tablets (I was 10) one week later he did a urine test and sent me straight to A&E. Mad to think that most kids diagnosed today don't ever get to that stage of DKA
