I'm having the best day

Hba1c at diagnosis in February was 14.7%..... Early April it was 8.7%

This time around I was aiming for 7.9% or under. Just an Indication that my control was tightening up. Imagine my shock when he told me 6.1% !!! I've tried so hard and couldn't be more pleased.

We've discussed pumps and he says I'm the perfect candidate. I'm hopefully doing DAFNE in November so at my next review in January he will refer me officially.

Having additional test done this time around. One for coeliac even though I said I have no reason to believe I have it! And one for thyroid antibodies. My thyroid function itself was fine but my mother has hypothyroidism so they want to double check I haven't got the antibodies.

He also kindly told me I'm allowed to try for a baby..... I declined the offer haha ask me again in a few years!

All round - a pretty good day!
 
If also like to point out that I've done that without low carbing. So I'm proof that you don't have to low carb and a normal balanced diet can work for some of us

If I were you I wouldn't go on the pump - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. You are obviously doing things right if your HbA1c is at 6.1%. I had an HbA1c in the 6s shortly after diagnosis. Hindsight tells me that it was the honeymoon period that got my control that good - it always helps if your body can control your sugar levels to a degree! Anyway, after my early good result, I had my insulin changed from mixed, to basal-bolus and my control went out the window for a bit.

I know that from your other posts on here that you don't take much insulin. Well, that's the essence of low carbing - low amounts of insulin means smaller mistakes, both high and low. So you're following the philosophy of it, if not the practice. However, most T1s require larger amounts of insulin and hence why most T1s aren't getting and HbA1c < 6.5%.

Oh yeah I don't doubt the honeymoon has helped me big time! If I can sustain an hba1c in the 6s will be the real test

My consultant is a big believer in pumps for pregnancy, I'm not pregnant but I intend to be eventually! So we both agree its better to start the pump early so I'm comfortable with it and in good control before conceiving. But it's still dependant on me completing DAFNE and a few other hoops
 
congrats Hale really please for you hun! pumps are very much the way forward i would say, Do it if your offered it, dont end up fighting tooth and nail like some of us have to, worst that happens is it doesnt work for you (dont see why it shouldnt)

I'm 23 and in no baby rush! Got 2 beautiful nieces and 3 handsome nephews (all 3 are under the age of 2!) to keep me entertained until I'm ready. Nice to know that I'm good to go on that front though if we wanted because the consultant had as good as banned me last time lol
 
I did dafne 2 years ago at the time my hb was 8.9 after 6 months it was down to 7. 2 , I fully recomend doing the dafne course it was the best thing I did,

Well done on getting your bg control a lot better but be careful of low bg levels and how low they go before you pick up on them.

I'm on a waiting list for it. I've read a lot about it and already use most of the principles, just need the 5 days in the room sorting out the finer details

6.1% is fantastic but I personally wouldn't want it any lower than that, you have to way up the pro's and con's of lower bg control....for example losing one's hypo sensitivity and the problems that can bring. I've only just in the last years or so got my Hba1c's into the 6's but I do still have excellent hypo awareness which is priceless above all else when you inject insulin.

Eating moderate amounts of carbs doesn't always mean higher insulin doses as some might suggest, I know from my experiences on this forum and reading elsewhere that a lot of type 1 low-carbers inject a similar amount of insulin to someone like myself ( I eat between 150-180g a day but inject on average 16-18 units of QA and 17 units of basal) due to the increase in protein and fat in their diet when replacing carbs, we are as they say ''all different'' and there's no one approach that suits all when it comes to diet.
 
Consultant and I did discuss hypos, I have maybe 1 a fortnight usually. Occasionally I have a cluster of them though. I notice them generally around 4, haven't been below 3.6 in about 2 months now so seems I've got that under control.

But as mentioned the low doses of insulin limit my chances of low low levels!

I won't be aiming to reduce that at all. If I can sustain it that would be great, but if I aim for 6.5% in January I think I would be on track
 
In reply to noblehead, your insulin doses are similar to mine (and we have similar Hba1c results too, I believe) and as stated I'm a low carber. For me, these are lower doses than when I was on carbs. Approximately half. Its down to reduced dose that my HbA1c has improved from the 7s to the 6s.

Ever wondered why people in the honeymoon period, people who do a lot of exercise, people with high insulin sensitivity, low or moderate carbers tend to have good HbA1c results? Because they require smaller doses of insulin, which means smaller mistakes.

But not surprising given where you work and your profession, I can imagine you take a pretty studied approach to all this.

I've got my three month appointment in about three weeks, with a consultant who tends to specialise in pumps, so keeping my finger crossed. In my case I think it would really help with the sports.
