7 weeks since diagnosis and I've not touched white bread, Today I ran out of Ryvita at work so bought a sausage barm. (BAP-ROLL) I think I have lost my taste for white bread. It was bland and I could taste the flour. Wholemeal bread is much tastier. Now I don't feel like I'm missing out on something. In 7 weeks I've learned to substitute one thing for another. Watch the carbs on what I'm eating and not missing much. Although I got caught out last night as I drink soda and lime in the evening instead of a larger. The brand I got at the weekend was very high in carbs. Didn't realise until I did a pre dinner BG test. I checked the label when the reading was high. I won't be making that mistake again. Did 5 mins of stepping to lower BG level before my dinner. Does anyone else find they eat for the sake of eating. As apart from midday I'm never hungry.

Strange that this thread came up at this moment because I was just thinking how my taste for food has changed. Yesterday I had to go to the dentist in town. I took advantage of the trip to got to B&Q, Tesco and a Chinese chippy which I have not done for ages and ages. I once used to get a takeaway and looked on it as a great treat.

I don't think I will be doing it again. I can't believe I used to think of it as a treat. The sweet and sour pork balls were Ok, The chicken and bean shoots was bordering on the nasty and the spare ribs were burnt offerings. No rice of course. It was expensive too.

I think the more natural food we eat the more our taste buds get used to it. Then when we do have processed food you realise how many of the additives in it you can taste. Things taste artificial.

First, yes I do eat for the sake of it, usually nuts, or a small piece of home-made cheesy biscuit if I've got any.

On the DESMOND course recently we were reminded how much salt is chucked into everything to awaken our taste buds and intensify flavours. Bad move! Also I'm amazed at how strong some of the bottled sauces are. Mrs DeeJayR likes a dollop of HP Fruity on her bacon and boy, is it pungent.
Remember (I'll shut up in a minute) that there is a craze just now for "posh" fast food based on the burger-and-bun model which has always meant cheap, tasteless solids with strongly flavoured processed sauces. Only not cheap any more.
Sorry, finished now.

When it comes to sauces, Less is more for me. I used to smoother food in it. Now I put a little dab on here and there and make the most of it. Also I now swing towards the sauces that are not too sweet. And to be honest I'm enjoying my food much better. By using a tiny dab I don't feel like I'm denying myself anything.

@bluejeans98 - dont worry you will come across things from time to time that send you high. As long as for the most part your are keeping them lower it wont harm you too much.
I have found that I am often eating because its time to eat - and I'm eating less mostly. I don't miss the carbs except for potatoes, chipped, mashed or roasted.... but I have found that if I add cream or butter or cheese to a mash topping on a shepherds pie or fish pie I can eat it without too much of a spike.

My partner always puts the potatoes on, brings to the boil then turns them off. Lets them cook this way. Then reheats before serving dinner. They don't seem to spike my BG. Which goes with the theory of reheating pasta etc. I eat some carbs. Being Northern Irish I could never give up my potatoes completely.

Forgot to mention, when it comes to roast potatoes. It's something similar. Par boil the potatoes. Let them cool. Then do in deep fat fryer till golden brown before serving.. Just make sure you use common sense when it comes to portion control. Shredded wheat and today's white bread have been the things to spike me. We all need some starchy carbs for the vitamins they contain, that complex carbs don't.

Yes, in my 20 weeks my tastes have changed totally!! I even find that a square of 90% dark chocolate has began to taste slightly "sweet"!! I certainly don't miss it crave anything, am never overally hungry and enjoy what I eat much more! Have up bread, rice, pasta, cakes etc overnight and have not looked back ( not will I!!) I sometimes have two small new potatoes with a roast dinner but finding now I'm not even that fussed!

@kimbo1962 90% choc is the new kitkat/bounty ;p well done on the change of palate

Amazing how we adapt when we have to. I now choose a completely different range of foods and love the change.
I do tend to nibble a bit in the evening, nuts pork scratching...whatever I can. Bad habits die hard
