A bit lost about what to do

after numerous bouts of undiagnosed illness over the past 18 months, I ended up at Hospital last week and after further blood tests am diagnosed as type 2. Have to say that all I've been given is a leaflet to read and some pills to take, oh, and see the nurse on the 25th.
Have been trying to keep to a low GI diet for past week and have to say that the pills and the diet have made me feel much better. Glad to read here that Metformin isn't bad to take so I'll keep them up, but only taking one a day and have to say that I cut that in half as the effect seems a bit extreme all in one go.
If I can reduce my weight and go back to exercising regularly again, can I ever expect to get back to normal again or am I stuck with type 2 for life ?

I think you are stuck with it for life. That does not mean you can't live normally though. You will probably have to watch your diet, as it seems you have started to do, perhaps continue with Metformin, have to incorporate a bit of exercise like walking, and go to the checks you are offered to stay well.

There is a bit of confusion at first and lots of things to learn, but most of those will be a new routine before you know it, and I think that for most people even if they had not had diabetes, these changes would be good ones.

In some cases, you can put the illness/condition into remission by ways of diet and weight loss. For a fair few on here, that is what they have done. Lots of people get readings after a while that are similar to non-diabetics. The whole thing revolves around dietary changes and exercise though - the more you put in, the better control you can get.

As a diabetic it is unlikely you will get to a level where you can eat the standard diet (lots of starch, sugar, fruit etc) in un-moderated quantities. You may well find you can have some sometimes - or maybe your system is sensitive to it.

You can find lots of good recipes on here for things to eat, lots of advice on how to get started with exercise and yummy things you can have when you feel like having a treat - it really isn't so bad

It just means that you have been thrust into a life style change that most of us would benefit from anyways.

I wish you the best of luck with your diabetes and the slightly bumpy ride until you get the hang of it - ask away, there's plenty people here ready to reply with their own experiences and ideas.
