A relatively ‘normal’ day!

Yesterday I had a normal day for the first time since diagnosis in September. I knew I was going out with some mates for the day and so deliberately decided I was going to see how I got on without thinking about my diabetes too much. A day in the pub and some beers at Christmas was not going to be something that I was going to miss out on!

So I drank what I wanted and ate what I wanted and...when I tested I was normal. I did drink quite a bit and maybe it was the alcohol that balanced out the food but it was good not worrying. To top it off I remembered that alcohol can lead to lows so I treated myself to a dirty donner kebab on the way home which again didn’t really affect me.

Woke up feeling dreadful but when I tested I was my usual fasting 6.1 and having a hell of a hangover was strangely quite enjoyable.

Accidentally forgot to take my metformin yesterday as well so my question really is what does the metformin actually do? The normal day I had yesterday suggests that I don’t need it? Obviously I won’t stop taking them until a doctor tells me I can but should I discuss this with the doctor?
 
I wish i can do that without injecting tons of bolus and do correction bolus when my meter show Hi.
 
Metformin is considered a safe drug that can lessen the affects of the liver overspilling causing dawn phenomena (liver dump) and has been shown to give a measure of protection to organs. It is also a mild appetite suppressant. Yes, I would talk it over with your GP/DN if you wish to change your dosage or drop it completely. Glad you had a good night out with t'lads and your phrase 'Dirty Doner' made me laugh.
 
Metformin is a build up drug not a fast acting one so missing one dose will not have any effect. I occasionally miss a dose and it makes no difference- glad you had a good night out it is almost Christmas after all - your numbers were normal (apart from your fasting you don't say what they are so I'm assuming they were below 7) but they were just a snapshot you may have been a lot higher or in fact lower during your night out. We all have a blow out once in a while we are only human and we have a life to live BUT don't let getting away with it once lull you into a false sense of security and tempt you to do it more often - that can be our downfall
 

Don’t worry, I don’t plan to! I quite like my new healthy life style and the benefits that it brings and very much want to continue it for ever! The hangover is less enjoyable as the day goes by as feel rotten still!
 
When i was first diagnosed two plus years ago i was on Metformin but came off it after about two months due to upset tums. My readings stayed the same giving me the impression it wasntbdoing a great deal. Xx
 
Great stuff Sawds (apart from feeling awful). Human again.
(There's nothing unusual about feeling dodgy after a few beers and a kebab)
My wife goes out to regular get-togethers. She says to me, well go out for a beer or two and have a kebab for tea. Which I used to do. Naughty but nice.
I still go out, but now it's a couple of glasses of red wine and a tray of meat from the kebab shop. Still nice but not quite so naughty.
