Advice for sister

I'm a type 1 diabetic...have been for 4 years now.im wondering if anybody can just give me a general chat or advice I'd like - it's about my sister who has been told she could be type 1 or pre type 1 diabetic.what does the latter mean.please help
 
Hi..well thats a difficult answer to give..there will be a thousand different opinions. ..i was told i was type 1 by a consultant. .the next time he said i was type 2 ...another dr had a very heated discussion with me about it...he said a true type 1 is someone who was diagnosed when they were a child all others are type 2...i dont even mention 'type' anymore..its a minefield...stand by for loads of conflicting messages...good luck

Has your sister got any symptoms that would suggest diabetes?
Pre Type1 diabetes? As an autoimmune condition type 1 is something you either have or do not have. Type 1 as a condition can take a while to fully develop and cause problems but nonetheless the initial symptoms give rise for concern.
Anyone at any age can become type 1 diabetic. Only the young getting Type1 is a complete nonsense.
If you or your sister suspect diabetes then the only way to find out is to seek medical advice along with relevant tests.
 
A couple of years before being diagnosed, I felt thirsty quite a lot, for no logical reason. I worried that I was perhaps diabetic but did nothing about it. I had a medical, as I was going to become a teacher, and was surprised and delighted that my urine test was normal.
18 months to 2 years later, the thirst had become unquenchable and I was diagnosed Type 1. Years later I asked my consultant if it was possible that I had been in the process of becoming diabetic, even though my urine had tested negative for sugar. He said it was possible. I can't remember his explanation but it was something about the way the pancreas can recover for varying periods of time, before it gives up altogether.
 
They've said this after several months of diagnosing her with type 2.but no insulin or tablets.and now suddenly they said it could be type 1 and could have to go on insulin
 
 
She has started glicazide tablets today.asking for me for advice now for everything! Can this tablet cause hypos?
 
Yes, I think my Type 2 brother was on that and it can cause hypos so your sister should eat regular meals to prevent it.

It is unlikely they still think she is Type 1 if they have put her on Gliclazide. It is not a suitable drug for those with significantly reduced ability to produce their own insulin such as a Type 1. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-medication/sulphonylureas.html It sounds like they believe she is Type 2.

Your sister should be given a meter and strips on the medication if she drives or operates machinery because it can trigger hypos.

Gliclazide works by making the pancreas produce extra insulin. Too few carbs and too much insulin - and you know what happens! It is perfectly possible to eat low carb on Gliclazide. Many people on this forum do just that, but care has to be taken and a knowledge of how Glic works and what can happen is essential.
