Advice needed re parking spaces...

My company have announced they are halving the parking spaces my dept are allowed and we are now fighting for the spaces. Aside from the fact that I life furthest away (most live 10 mins drive away) and have a young son to pick up (which the others don't) I am looking for ideas. They have said that that those with special / medical grounds will get priority and I know it is cheeky but I thought I would ask on the grounds of my diabetes.

I know you lot are very eloquent so I am looking for reasons / ideas to justify me having a space.My journey is currently is 40 mins in to work and 1 hour home in the car and if I lose my space it will be 1hr 30 mins each way ( 2 tubes and a 20 mins walk). I have to say that since diagnosis in April I haven’t yet been on the tube on my own and am a bit frightened about doing so and having a hypo so publicly.

Well, I think your last sentence says it all. Explain your situation exactly like that. You have a genuine fear of using the tube for a very valid reason. Hope you get to keep your parking space.
 
I think your reasons sound good enough on their own. personally I'd be reluctant to use my diabetes in this sort of situation. Unless there was some complications which affected my mobility.

I know what you mean but when I heard that others (with what I would deem to be lesser reasons) have applied I was worried that I would lose out just because I didn't. I haven't used my new circumstances for any other "excuse" and have just got on with things as best as .

Would it be less public if you had a hypo whilst driving?
 
Just write a letter explaining the difficulties that you are faced with eg getting your child to school, having to take 2 trains, the extra time needed if you are forced to use public transport plus that you are still adjusting to your diabetes diagnosis, worrying about tube delays and all that, so everyting added up together would cause you ever so much stress and pressure which in turn would have a negative effect on your diabetes/bg - and that is the truth.
Funny enough that is exactly the same situation we had earlier this year at my work place (KIngs Cross in London) and our colleague wrote a note explaining issues, she got her parking space ok.

Yes I think it would. Infact yesterday I had signs at 3.9 - pulled over treated myself and tested again 10 mins later (4.3) and went on. I would rather do that in my car than on the platform of Tottenham Court Road Station (or worse on a packed central line / northern line tube). This may seem daft to you but for some reason this is a big thing for me and I am scared of it happening. It was bad enough when I felt odd in Tescos the other day and had to find a quiet corner to test (only 4.2 so ok, I guess I had just had a sudden drop). This is all very new to me and I am a very shy easily embarrassed person. it has been hard enough to be up front at work about it and these are people I have know for over 10 years who care about me.

Louise, there you go, add the response to Buachaille to your letter, just explain really well why you need to have this parking space, I cannot see anyone refusing this.

Fingers, toes and everything else crossed for you, let us know the outcome so that I can uncross everything or else I will get cramp (arent I witty huh? )
 
The outcome will be a couple for weeks so you had better untie yourself now! I couldn't bear to think of you suffering :wink:

I think that now the DVLA recommends recovery time of 40 minutes before driving again after a hypo, because you could still not be fully alert until then.
